Make sure the white/red wire is hooked up to the right wire.
If it's not, it'll do what you describe.

One thing to remember when installing a MSD enhancer, connect the white wire from the start stop switch first to the matching connector white wire lead, pre 96' stator wire white/red will then plug in to the other white, 96' up stators will need a female to female jumper to connect to the late 62T stator.

i had several do the same thing, it ended up being the stator was going bad. would work fine with a stock cdi. apparently the msd needs more power?

I copied this from a different post.
"Another interesting point is the "sparks when you let off the start button" syndrome. This always means on of two things......the cdi is bad, or the pulser coil is bad, or the wire from it to the e box is open."

The Reason was

THE STATOR, even though it was testing good. I sent it to John at jet ski solutions to get it refurbished - I tell ya it came looking new and working better than new :). thanks John. He said it tested fine without running also, but once he had it hooked up to something it was a total failure.
Thank you sjetrider for the fuel filters, I owe ya.
Thank you Chrisdoc 0608 for the link, and thank you every one for their time.
I put my old coil, and cdi back for now.
Yamanube, it was a good guess about spilling the beer:biggrin:
