New sxr hard to start

I picked up a new 05 sxr this spring and it's very hard to start the first time after sitting for a week. It takes about 5 minutes of intermittent cranking to get it to fire - but after the first start it fires right up the rest of the day.

I'm still breaking it in but it seems to run great and doesn't seem like there are any carb/compression issues or anything.

Any secrets with the choke/throttle that will get it going easier? I turn the choke full on and don't touch the throttle til it fires. I had an old 750sx and that seemed to be the best way to get it going.

I know a primer would probably solve the problem but I'm looking for possible issues or suggestions with the stock set-up first.

Pull choke fully on, crank starter just until you get one single "sputter", turn off choke completely and fire it up. Thats how my buddies SXR fires up, like clockwork everytime.

I know this is an old thread, but that is EXACTLY how my ski has to start

Thread back from the dead!

This particular SXR starts with choke full on, throttle fully pinned, hit start and within a few revolutions springs to life, turn off choke, done.

Once I figured out what this one wanted I decided no primer was necessary. Never had a ski that wanted full throttle to cold start before - but that seems to be what makes this one work. The ski has been bulletproof so far and is still basically stock but with TBM plate/grate/rear sponsons/turnplate and some zero degree bars it's a blast to ride. Glued to the water compared to my superjet.

i may expose my stupidity, but dont doing those two things cancel each other out. when choke is not applied butterfly is straight up and down and throttle plate is covering throat. with choke pulled it is covering throat and throttle plate is straight up and down. (i'm cringing as i hit post cause i am probably missing something obvious)

oh and uga86. never mind...pilling on the bulldogs is getting old

The choke plate reduces the air pressure and the case pressure is forced to suck a bunch of fuel into the carbs.

It's kind of like a primer at the expense of the starter.
