New to site and new to stand ups.

Hey guys, my name is Jack and I recently bought an 89 650sx. I just painted it and smothered the thing in camo Hydroturf. I just replaced the fuel selection switch and thats about it. I hooked it up to the water, turned on the ski and revved it, then turned on the choke and stopped revving and the switched back to just revving the engine. Next it revs way down to shutting off. I have tried charging the battery and It doesn't seem to start up. I believe there is water still in the system and i am worried about the water ruining the engine or anything else. I just want to be able to ride this thing and have some fun already lol. Can someone give me some good straight forward advice of what to do? Thanks!

Try throwing some gas/oil mixture or starting fluid in the carb just to get the water out of the engine and then go about getting ski fixed when you don't have rust as an immediate danger

Ok so it is a little late but I will try it tomorrow for sure and get back to you on how it goes. So what your saying though is that I should not have to worry about the rust ?
I have a friend who can pretty much fix anything, he has 2 stand ups and knows them like the back of his hand so I will have him take a look soon also. Thanks so much a and I will get back to you tomorrow

You will have to worry about rust if you font make sure you blow the water out of it by starting it up. Might have to pull the plugs and crank over a few times. Fogging oil to help evaporate the water stuck in there if any. And yeah if you have the friend that knows his stuff that is an awesome thing to have

A couple days shouldn't do much if any damage. But, get it to ur friend ASAP! Be nice to him and give him whatever he wants lol. A good mechanic u can trust is worth their weight in gold!!

not really sure what the issue is that your having. anyway sounds like 2 out of 3 650sx's my friends all bought at the same time because thats all they could afford. it sounds like a fuel issue to me which wouldnt surprise me because like i said out of the 3 of my friends that bought a 650, 2 of them took a crap on them as soon as they put it in the water, i would honestly start with a carb rebuild kit. there is a FREAKING PERFECTION to the carbs on thos things. when you pull the carb to replace everything that comes with the carb kit you need to remember THESE EXACT DIRECTIONS. when you replace the float needle and the metal swivle piece that holds it, take the screw that holds the rod to the swivle piece and screw it all the way down. once it is buttoned down, give it a 1/4 turn out. the carb requires a 1-2mm height (and thats about the right height) to actuate the gasket on that sits on the plastic piece that sits on the opposite end of the float needle. cleanthe jets obviously. then when you button everything back up, there is a likelihood that your carb is out of adjustment seeing as how you just bough the ski. i believe the stock adjustments for the the top screw is 5/8 turn out from closed and bottom is 1 1/4 out from closed.

like i said these skis IMO are junk but they are good learner skis. both my buddies skis to run off of thos adjustments. after countless hours of pulling off fuel lines, replacing parts, pulling things appart, tanking the tanks off. anyway. if it helps please let me know, if it doesnt help then sorry, once again im not really sure what your issue is. just kinda sounds like the ski runs for a few seconds then dies when its in the water. thats exactly what happens to my buddies skis and then they get pissed. BTW i have yet to get the skis to run PRIMO, but they will function half decently with the carb adjustments iv provided.

Did i read that correctly? The ski was already running and you turned the choke on and it died? Its flooded with fuel.
Choke is for starting a cold motor. If the choke is off and the ski is on, there isnt a reason to turn the choke on.
