New to standups

Just picked up my first standup, a beauty SJ SN 650. Runs like a top, and been using it like a madman. Love it.

Just wondering what everyone does for pre/post ride maintenance and winterizing, and just general maintenance, ie, what does everyone suggest for oil usage and stuff like that. Any and all info would be fantastic.

Oil type has been beat to death on here, a lot of personal preference. For a ole 650, any name brand tc-w3 oil will be sufficient.

General maintenance, just look over the ski every ride and if it starts acting funny, stop riding and figure out what's wrong with it.

Thanks bro,

Ya i wasnt sure if it should be fogged or anything like that after ridding or after x amounts of rides because of it being a two-stroke

And like Yami-rider said tcw3 oil! Resist the urge to use that $10 a gallon walmart "oil". I use klotz or quicksilver but there are many good oils out there. I'm sure amsoil and other folks have a high quality lube. Another STRONG recommendation is if you know its your last ride for a few weeks put some STA-BIL 360 MARINE in there. It works to keep gas from gelling up. Also, if you don't already use it check your fuel filter before and after the ride for line plaque (The crap that coats fuel lines from age and crap gas) as the stabil will start to clean it out. :)

thanks for the advise bro. I will definitely add some to the tank before winterizing. I ended up picking up some marine amsoil on season ending clearance

I also noticed there is water in the hull after riding. Not much, but enough, and the bilge just doesnt seem to pick it up. is this normal, and should i shop-vac it out or just leave it?

I get a little water left below the bilge pickup maybe 1/2 cup after I lean the ski back on the hitch hauler with the bilge running. I stick a towel in there and get the lion's share cause I don't want it to get slimey. Also, when you store it, even overnight, leave the hood cracked. I tuck the hood lock UNDER the hull to make sure air flow gets in there. Moisture is the enemy. If you ride salt make sure you spray everything down like it's a religion. Also, spray the trailer if you use one too. Freshwater? Life is good for you :cool:.

probably about 1/2" or 1/3" of water, enough that you can see it but the bilge won't pick it up for some reason. I ride freshwater. definitely will leave the hood off a bit in the future

There is usually around 1/4" water in the bottom because the siphon bilge can't suck it completely dry.

I usually use a towel to clean the ski with Hotsauce spray to remove the water spots, and then use the same towel to absorb that standing water sitting in the bottom of the hull (a quick job, doesn't have to be bone dry in there) and leave the hood off for a few days to let it fully dry out.

I run 40:1 oil, because the more the better. I usually run Pennzoil TCW3, but sounds like you already picked up some amsoil.

As others said, fog it if it will sit more than a month. I usually keep the battery on a tender if I won't ride within the next weekend.

The maintenance does seem light... Grease the steering fittings and make sure everything is tight.

I recently disassembled and greased the pole pivot bushings and steering pivot details, made it a little smoother.
