newb question ...wearing a helmet

First post so go easy on me... I've been riding my first ski for a season now. 2015 Superjet. I've been riding motocross all my life. After all my injuries ..i'm all about being safe and it also keeps my wife happy..lol. All my buddies riding don't where helmets and say there is no need..we are just lake ripping.. but now we are racing beuys and jumping wake ...and starting to learn more tricks. Anyways my question is, do most guys only were there helmets for racing and riding surf? I've have been wearing my old moto helmet and need to get something lighter. Did a search and seems downhill mb helmet is the way to go. Any feed back is much appreciated

If its dot approved it should be fine. I dont know if downhill mountain bike helmets are rated. I care about my noggin so I'll put up with a little extra weight, you will get used to it. I wouldn't wear something from Walmart...

I wear a moto helmet for surf, v-wake, or if I'm trying to learn something sketchy. Any other time i don't. I've bounced my helmet against my ski hard enough to see stars a couple times. I don't ride buoys but would wear a helmet if I did. My chin has been sewn up twice (almost the same spot) from riding a ski without a helmet. My wife mentions "helmet" and "knee braces" everytime I go ride. Mtb helmet may be a little easier on the neck.

Def, wear a helmet and protective gear. whether riding hard or not. I've seen stars, by getting knocked in the surf, and I've cracked my knee in half, shin bone sticking out...while practicing flips in the river.
My point being, you could get seriously hurt whether in the calm river/lake or surf once you start trying tricks. I think minimum, wear a helmet and knee/shin pads.
This is the helmet I ride with, its light and does not hold water, unlike moto helmets.

I've been riding skis since 1996, but as any of us will say....this is just my 2 cents.

661 comp shifted helmet for life! Even if it's a downhill mtb helmet it kicks ass. I've had my ski land directly on my head multiple times and have marks on the top of it from so. Even if you're not going upside down its still easy to wack your head. Always ride with shoes, gloves, and a helmet.

I used to wear one of my TLD MX helmets, but they are heavy like 1440gram (ad water to foam, its easy 2500+gram) And for me riding freestyle, those extra punds/grams means a lot.
I bought a O'neal Spark downhill helmet, wich was the lightest fibreglass downhill i could find (800 gram if i recall correct) And it has a nice magnet strap system, that is perfect for wet gloves :)
BUT if you are racing seriously bouy racing, i might go with a DOT proved MX helmet that would take more abuse, in case of a high energy impact.
Anyway im very happy with the O'neal spark helmet, pretty cheap, fits my head nice, super light and cool design :)
Oh yeah, on a site note, last summer during a "freestyle School" i had had to take my ski for a spin before we should attend the "class" - rode without my helmet and did a good flip, that had me landing on my right ear, blowing my right eardrum. Pretty stupid and pretty painfull when you get water in your "middle ear". Ride clever and safe :)

if you are used to mx as i am the weight should not be a issue im used to it i have one industries, troy lee and bell helmets!i here fly makes a nice helmet that works good in water

Thanks for all the feed back you guys! I totally agree with wearing a helmet.. i do for everything else (moto, karting, snowboarding) i did some research after reading all your posts. i have narrowed it down between a giro cipher, sixsixone comp or a bell and will use that for lake /surf rippin. when i get serious about racing i will look to see what is the best DOT/snell moto helmet that is the lightest. My TLD SE3 helmets are so heavy when they get wet ..haha . Again thanks for all the help !!

Well that explains everything... Haha sorry man couldn't resist.

I wear a helmet when I'm trying something new or sketchy. Fell out of my footholds upside down last weekend and felt the ski hit the water right behind me. 6 inches closer and I would have been out cold

Also note that whenever you aren't wearing a helmet, thats when a 30' boat shows up and you really want to huck your ski. Nothing worse than having to decide whether to run back to shore and miss the wake or risk it.

I never leave shore without a helmet for that reason alone.

Save time, get a good helmet the first time. Buy a Shoei.

I have a 661 and it was nice because it was light. Fit wasn't great, it rusted and eventually the straps came off because the fasteners rusted through. I ride mostly brackish water and rinsed it most every ride.

The new leatt MX helmets are ultra light and ultra safe and ultra expensive but are ultra bitchin. I use a fly carbon kevlar f2 somthing yadda yadda and its extremly light as well.

i ended up ordering at Fly Racing Default helmet . Ordered it from Jensonusa and had it in 2 days... and thats to Canada! It Had great reviews, super light and well vented. I have a couple new TLD SE3 i use for motor that i will where when i start racing. Ordered some for my buddies also. From day 1 i have alway won my helmet. way way to many injures from all the years of riding motocross... don't need any more on the water ... haha pumped to try it out this weekend.

I bought a Specialized downhill mtb helmet last year, it has been an excellent helmet. The strap buckles have not rusted and the peak has been solid. I used to ride with a mx helmet but whether you feel/notice/realize it or not, the added weight and big air landings take a serious toll on the discs in your neck. I was in a nasty car wreck a good few years ago that messed up my lower back and neck. The neck seemed to get quite a lot better until I started riding with a mx helmet on the water. The pounding from the waves and weight of the water when you either do a sub or fall off gives a small form of whiplash. I began to develop serious pain in my neck from it. Since I've moved over to a downhill mountain bike helmet my neck has recovered and I no longer get pain there after a good 3-4 hours of riding.
