300/440/550 Newby with first ski. First launch questions and concerns!

Hey guys! Just bought my first jet ski! 84 JS550. So I got lots of questions and was hoping you guys could help me out. I want to take it to the lake but want to run a little pretrip before I do. The jet ski has the following mods (that i can remember).

Westcoast exhaust, manifold, waterbox.
SS Impeler (dont know brand or pitch)
Oceanpro extended rideplate, and intake grate.
New high torque starter.
K&N Airfilter with adaptor plate.
I'm sure theres more.

First off I this is my first ski so bare with me.
1). I'm wanting to check the carb tune and I'm not very familar with carbs. I ran it for a little bit and pulled a plug to see if it was running rich or lean, the plug was pretty wet (Rich). I ran it off the hose but didnt wanna get on it too much until it was at the lake. So if i go to the lake should i just strap it to the dock and full throttle it and then kill the motor and pull a plug to see what its doing? Or are these things tuned by the smoke from the exhaust? I guess I'm just wondering what to look for.

2). Bilge pump. As this is my first ski im sure im going to bale quite a bit. Do these come with a built in bilge pump and if not is it a must have before I go out on the water?

3). The guy that had it before me didnt have a lanyard style start/stop switch so he had the idle linkage screw set so it would stall if you dont have your finger on the throttle. I know this is I guess an easy fix but is this even a good fix? It's making it stall out instead of killing ignition, i would think it would flood the engine and not start as easily. Would it be ok to run it like this until i go on ebay and get a lanyard style.

4). Let me know if theres anything I need to watch for with these 550's or any tips for getting out on the water.

Thanks guys, hope I'm not a nuisance!

I'm new to this as well but have a 440, I don't have a lanyard either but when you fall off it should turn back towards you in a circle as mine does. Adjust the carb so it ticks over nicely so it does come back when u fall.
we were having trouble with our carb but adjust the low end so I'd idles and then slowly give it throttle and keep adjusting from there until it revs up smoothly from idle to full throttle without it bogging out.
other than that have fun and just keep checking everything once ur on it as might need adjusting again once you've been thrashing it for a while.
hope this helps a little
cheers Steve

test n tune your carbs with the ski under load so that means in the water or on a trailer in the water. id find a safe starting point, take it for a short ride and see how it feels then make adjustments... rinse n repeat

i wouldnt trust any stock syphon bilge... get an electric. cheap insurance. you should be fine to learn just be concious of it

its fine to run with the idle low... its actually a method many use in place of a lanyard. pretty abusive to ur starter while you learn tho

if you havent looked into it yet... consider a limiting rope to save the pole

good luck... braap!
