No start SJ

My old ski won't start. Pushing the start button - I get nothing. No click from the solenoid, starter not spinning.

I seem to have power running through all cables - and they are all new from JSS as of early this year.

The fuse is good. I believe the switch to be good - should I check the solenoid first...or the starter? The solenoid is by far the newer of the 2 - replaced with a new one about 2 years ago. The starter is probably the oriinal one from 1947.

How can I test the starter in the ski?

you can jump the pins of the start stop switch connection back at the firewall to eliminate the switch as a problem..... you just have to figure out which pins and how to do it.....

I would try this first too. it's the red and brown wires, you can jump it with a paper clip or a cut back wire.

Don't bother pulling the electrical box apart. Run a ground wire from one of the ebox screws to a motor ground, ie: intake bolt or head bolt.
If that does not work , then pull the box apart. But it sounds like your box is not grounded.

X2. You can also use a small pair of needle nose pliers. If it does start, choke it out to kill or use the same pliers, wire, or paper clip across the white and black terminals.

I already tested the switch (both sides) - but I'll double check tonight. I really think something else is the problem. ski ran fine on Saturday, went to crank it on Sunday...nothing.

What are you doing tonight?

taking Mom to dinner and a show.

or use the stop button. the stop button still works if you don't pull the black/white wire connection apart.

problem located - the wires from the switch had a splice in them that went bad...so that's now taken care of.

but - I have a bendix that seems to not want to engage. What's the fix for that? Last Saturday, I just beat on the flywheel cover until it engaged so I could ride for the day.

In my experience, pull the flywheel, disassemble the bendix, clean it and re-grease it, reassemble and reinstall.....problem fixed...

This would be a cool thread. I've taken the bendix out and cleaned and lubed it real good for a long lasting fix, but I couldn't figure out how to take it apart.

ive removed front cover, stuffed a rag in there , sprayed the bendix with carb cleaner.

then spray it with some oil ( NOT WD40)
then light grease on a few places, and got about 4 more years out of a 'junk' bendix.

taken care of how? sent to JSS?

I spliced mine with solder and even heat shrink over heat shrink. Water still got in and corrsion happened. YOU remember that day.
Nothing ruins a day on the like like ss switch problems.

I'm out of the good butt splices (adhesive lined, with solder) - but I'll pick some up on the way home to fix it. The previous splice I did several years ago, and if only 1 went bad in all that time - I'm happy with it. They were soldered, coated with liquid electrical tape, then heat shrinked. Then I had additional layer of heat shrink over all 4 splices (about a 1' worth) that I sealed with liquid electrical tape.

I can repair this in a few minutes and be good to go until I can locate another switch.
