At a local lake last night:

LAKE TILLERY, N.C. — Deputies said a man died Wednesday evening after the jet ski he was riding flipped on Lake Tillery.

Capt. Robert George with the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office said 30-year-old Roderick Skyyler Polk of Wadesboro died in the accident, which happened shortly before 8:15 p.m. near the Lilly’s Bridge Boat Landing.

Polk was riding a jet ski with a woman when witnesses said it flipped, throwing both riders into the water.

The woman was able to swim to the boat landing, but witnesses said Polk went underwater and never resurfaced. His body was recovered around 12:45 a.m. Thursday by divers with the Montgomery County Rescue Squad.

While the suspected cause of death is drowning, George said Polk’s body was sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Chapel Hill for an autopsy.

Neither Polk nor the female rider were wearing life jackets, George said.

North Carolina Wildlife officers are investigating the incident.

Even though I never do it, I have no idea how someone can drown without a lifevest. Im not fat and I float on my back just fine. Is it form panicking, or was this dude drunk?

edit; getting knocked unconcious obviously will do you in without a vest

I sink like a brick if I don't have a chest full of air. What pisses me off is he didn't at least make his girlfriend where a vest.

Me too. I need a FULL breath to remain buoyant.

Either way, maybe he hit his head on the ski or maybe he had a heart attack from all of the fun they were having on their couch.

Ive been knocked out WITH a life vest on, probably saved me even tho it was only a short time. With out it you can just sink like a rock and suck up water, then your done. Life vests are good for two things, when you cant swim(or swim anymore) or when you knock you head and fall unconscience.

I would be willing to say that at least he was drinking, lost control of the ski and then all this happened.

Lesson here: ALWAYS WEAR YOUR PFD FOLKS!!!!

5'10" 180 lbs. I sink when I exhale. Muscle doesn't float.

Saving $2 on a McDouble saves you $300 on a carbon part, but you sink, and your jet ski doesn't look as cool.

Wear a vest, eat McDonalds, buy carbon. All will be ok.

Water is sticky. It has a fairly high surface tension. Lying on your back increases your surface area. You float on your back but not perpendicular to the water line. It is against all instinct to surrender, lye on your back and hope for the best. Instinct is to keep your head up. Less surface area means less flotation, or perhaps better stated, better penetration of the water surface tension. Additionally, the fight to survive leads to thrashing, which also brakes the surface tension of the water. With no surface tension, you cannot float, and if you cannot float, you only stay above the water by propelling yourself up. If you can't swim, you can't create propulsion.

Also, your lungs are a major part of keeping you floating. As said, once you take in water, you lose that flotation, and don't have the oxygen to keep yourself up. Hence why people sink when they drown. They only are found floating because decomposition of the deceased causes a breakdown in body composition into a gaseous form, so people only float a day or 3 after they have died from drowning.

Wear a vest.
