Other Not skis... Winchboarding

Me and one of my friends made a wakeboard winch a few weeks ago, and we finally got a video together this week.
For those of you who don't what it is, its an engine that attaches to reel which pulls in rope, held by a wakeboarder.

Here is one of the short clips we made, we need more footage for a better one, It was a blast. Also the youtube encoding screwed up the quality.

Just some more info on the winch.
All we did was take a 5 hp grass mower engine, bolted to a base we welded out of scrap metal, then we managed to receive 2 laser cut steel discs for free, which bars were welded across to make the reel. Then we attached an axle and bearing holders on two supports bars on the side. Then a caliper brake was attached as well as a rope feeder on the front.

Look into a torque converter and a belt. It pulled so much smoother on our setup
Yeah thats what we are planning on doing, the chain pops off quite frequently, we only have spent $50 so far to get it together though... so spending money on it has been low. Got any more info/pics? Please, PM me if so. We also need to realign the reel and break we are wearing it out quick.

Nice part is that we already have a few people will to buy these from us..

If you use a torque converter it will allow the motor to idle without the need of a break. Just kill the motor when the rider is down

The motor has a Centrifugal clutch on the shaft, however due to the motors horrid condition it just dies at idle after a few minutes. The carb needs a rebuild asap, but it doesn't affect us, except at idle.

A brake? Because the reel weighs around 30 lbs and is spinning at a couple hundred rpms(maybe?). When you run out of rope the handle hits the line feeder mounted in front, breaking the support bars in half. Don't ask how i know.

The brake is wearing out quickly because the discs are rubbing against it due to misalignment when we dont want to brake.

I see. We never used a break in the 3 years we wake skated without any issues. Rider falls momentum is stopped. Rider lands, we killed to motor and his drag stopes the winch. But yeah it wouldn't hurt to have one added and aligned. :)

Sounds awesome!, got any pics of the setup? I should also mention we use this one land with landboards on golf course greens and longboards 30+mph. When the rider lets go 20 feet away from the setup on land or in water, we need to stop it quickly.

Surprisingly we setup the bearings pretty well, and the reel will spin for a good 5 minutes when attached to the motor that we just stopped(with no rope, clutch allows it spin)

Hey, How is the 8.75 hp? I was thinking of using a 13 hp. What torque converter is that? How much did you pay for it?

Also where did you get the spool halts? I'm thinking of building one out of stainless for the ocean.

This is what we came up with.
That thing is clean... A lot better design than we have. The car hitch attachment looks awesome.

The 5hp on mine is underpowered for water, however, in the creek we used it in, we were going 2/3rds throttle just because it was too narrow or shallow at points. We definetly need a torque converter as well. Maybe some wheels on the bottom too..
