Novi 44s or 48s????

Looking to change my stock 38s to something a bit bigger.

What would be the ideal carb size go give me more bottom end hit for my set-up?

Went on novi web site and they recomend 44s for limited ski freestyle.

Iv seen a set of 48s for sale but not sure if they would be to big for my set-up.

05 superjet
riva wet pipe
riva head 185psi
boysen rad valves
msd total loss
solas 13/17 set back 3mm
bored nozzel+pump cone

Cheers

You need to get that ported as mentioned to get the signal strength high enough for 48's - Full Specs 48's will probably 'just' work without porting based on your specs because of the venturi/atomiser design (so I read on here once)

44's should work fine.

Thanks guys.

Porting is very expensive where i live and wouldnt be going down that route.

The carbs will probably be the last mod ill be making on my ski for quite a while and would like to find out what size carb will be best matched to my set-up for better bottom end grunt.

What would be advantages and disadvantages of using to big a carb with my ski set-up?

Thanks

Iv only been skiing for year and half so my knowledge of tuning is limited, i get most of my advise off the net(X-H20) and from friends that have been skiing for quite a while and do most of there tuning themselves.

I recently fitted the total loss and was really pleased with the way the ski was running, bottom and midrange was so much sharper and lots of snap right off idle.

A friend recommended that my next upgrade would be a good set of carbs to replace the oem 38s.

So would i be better off putting the cash to something other than carbs?

Honestly, I'd start saving for the port job. I run pretty much the same setup as Big Kahuna but with stock 38's and it runs great. Sure I could go up to bigger carbs, but I think the port job ought to come first. Like BK said - the 38's will flow plenty of fuel with the right jetting.

FWIW, I am running a set of Novi 44's on my LPW 5mm stroker Able motor (754cc) and they are phenomenal!!! I was running smaller carbs before, and when I switched to these it was night & day difference!

For 760cc and less I think 44's (and possibly 46's) are optimal.

Thanks again

ll have to look into the porting and see how much it wil cost. Im in Ireland and would have to ship to England to get good port job done.

So what exactly should i be asking for? is there different types of freestyle porting? and whats the difference between race porting and freestyle porting?

I have a friend who used to race superstock superjet few years back and he had porting job done on his cylinders, and his crank cases matched up and smothed out, but anyone i no that tried to ride it said it was like an on off switch and hard as hell to ride.

Id be well pissed if i got it back and it was like that to ride.

Now im getting really confused, 44s or porting.

Looks like everyone has there own personal preference that both give good results.

Think i might be better putting cash into a trip to Xtreme Action presents Freestyle Weekend & Clinic with Ant Burgess @ the Thorpe Park Theme Park England. 100 pounds for 4 days. and learning how to get the most out of what iv got already.:haha:

QJS seems to have an excellent rep for port jobs - there's probably no need to ship it here.

I live in Belgium and had my cylinders ported by LPW, shipping wasn't that expensive. Great improvement, he did a really nice job.
I'm still running the stock 38's with Paul's specs. No tunung issues at all.
If you don't really know how to tune carbs (like me), don't touch them.
My superjet is going strong with the stock 38's.
Think also about the fuel consumption, I suppose gas is very expensive in Ireland, just like in Belgium.
Greetz.

Hi James - I'm in the UK - you have the following choices (in no order of preference)

1) QJS - Chris (www.airtimeproducts.co.uk)
2) Six Hills Yamaha - Fred or Paul Mullins - 01664 434080
3) Jet Shed - Alan or Ria - 01142 477141

Bottom line here is - your stock porting on a 62T cylinder will not flow enough fuel and air (nor create enough signal strength) to support 48's - 44's maybe just.. its a bit like putting 300bp on a front wheel drive car - waste of time!

PM - if you want to run through your options.

Cheers
