o-ring chain vs. non o-ring

i am putting new renthal sprockets on my 99 cr250. i am trying to decide between two chains. the renthal r1mx chain or the r3 o-ring chain. i am looking for ease of installation and longest lasting. do you have to do anything special when installing an o-ring chain? any help is appreciated.

thanks-chris

o yea i live in las vegas so i only ride in the desert. i ride in the mud like twice a year because it only rains a couple times here.

o-ring chains will last a lot longer by keeping the grease inside the link. You only need to worry about keeping it adjusted, clean, and lubricating the rollers. The only negative that I could think of would be that an o-ring chain is a little stiffer and will take away a minimal amount of HP to the rear wheel until it loosens up. I would always pick an o-ring chain over a conventional in an off road situation because the longevity is worth it IMO.

Renthal chains suck arse.
The longest lasting chain I've used was a Sidewinder SS Oring (or xring, it's been so long since I bought it), It was expensive but it's been on two bikes, and is just starting to wear.
It was expensive though.

I would go with an o-ring chain for sure. When I use to race motocross I ran the DID ert 520, but I got hurt and was in a coma so now i just trail ride and wanted a chain to last a long time so I went with the o-ring. I have used it all year and not even adjusted it and it still feel like new! Yeah a little horse power is being robed but not as much horse power that you are losing from a wore out non o-ring chain.

the DID ERT 520 gold chain is the best non o-ring chain you can buy, that thing will last for a long time. if you really want an o-ring chain def go with a DID chain or an RK they both work just as well. just a little fyi you might notice slightly more snap if you have a standard chain vs. an o-ring (less drag).

I also use the ert 520 gold, its a great chain. O ring is to expencive and it causes drag, the ert 520 lasts just as long provided that u clean lube and keep it adjusted. cleaning lubing and adjusting is very easy and not every time consuming. when changing sprockets or chain always change both at the same time.

he likely wouldn't feel the drag, but sounds like he'll be running in sand alot, that's pretty harsh on a non ringed chain,

O/X-ring for longevity. Renthal R3 chains are fine. Spendy but fine. Sidewinder chains are no better...just more expensive. I've used both and many others...no noticeable differences in wear or performance. It comes down to price and preferance.
