So I finally got a look at the 2002 I bought. The bearings in the pump had disintegrated. When I pulled the driveshaft, the impeller came out the front of the pump, with the pump shaft and inner races...
I can't get the pump off though. Looks like someone used nickel plated steel bolts and all four are spinning. So I am pretty sure I need to cut the tray open to get at the nuts. My question is how much do I cut out? Previous owner put foot holds in, so it's been cut before. Any advice on where to cut and how to put it back together?
Also, want to replace the starter. Which other Polaris motors use this same starter?

The Kawasaki 750/800 starter works with the Octane. I would at least cut the whole bottom section of the tray out and refoam if it hasnt been already. Foam it with ping pong balls or polystyrene foam. Then put some drain plugs in the back. Also now would be the time to put an extra tube in for a trim cable if you want (Raider trim nozzle will bolt up to the pump).

So I can get away with just cutting out the bottom and not going as high as the gunwales? What are the inserts like? I was thinking about having some nuts welded to a strip of stainless, one pair for each side, and epoxying that in.

I cut the bottom of the tray out, broke 2 bolts for the pump and got the other 2 to unscrew. Foam is wet, and pump is a mess. Hopefully IMPROS can do a miracle for me.
Where would I put the tube in for trim and what should I use?
Did someone say a yamaha pump would bolt up and work for the mean time?

Run a 1/2 piece of plastic conduit on the left side of the ski (as your standing in the tray). Run it out a couple inches into the pump area and a couple into the engine compartment. You can cap it off until your ready to use it. Seal it with 3m 5200 where you have it through the hull.
The Yamaha pump will bolt in from what I understand.

Yea, on the left side. Just make sure you leave room to be able to get to the pump bolt. I set them up with 1/2" conduit, glue a coupler with a threaded adapter on. Then I use waterproof cord grippers on each end to hold the cable and seal it up. I put a CATS on an Octane pump, its pretty easy. Just weld a couple of stainless nuts to the pump with stainless rod.

How far out should the conduit stick? It looks like the tube for my steering cable is a piece on PVC someone bought at Home Depot. Is this typical, or has someone replaced it? Do you drill and tap the Polaris venturi for the trim ring? Do you have a picture of what you had to weld to the pump and what do you use for a cable set up?
