oem bilge

So, I've always wondered....the oem bilge goes up to a block at the top of the engine compartment, before going down to the actual pickup. Why is that? Why wouldn't the hose just go strait to the pickup from the pump?

I'm pretty sure it's because, since it's a siphon, it's only "drawing" out water from the hull when under power. When sitting there idle, it'd leak the other direction if there wasn't that air trap loop of the hose.

If the plastic elbow is below the waterline or if the pinhole gets clogged the ski will sink in a couple of hours.

Yup, found out the hard way early on in jetski life!!!!!! Had a ski that was filling up with water and could not figure out why, then one day noticed that plastic piece was laying down in the hull.........

while we are on this topic (and before I start my own thread) does anyone have an opinion either way regarding OEM bilge siphon deletes? I have a squarenose surf build with dual 500gpm Rule pumps and the oem siphon was removed and the passage is being used for dual cooling... I'm debating if I should be adding a one-way drain/scupper valve or if the electric pumps will be sufficient.

oem + electric pumps
vs.
electric pumps only (not currently automatic in my case)
vs.
scupper + electric pumps

Electric pumps only. Keep the dual cooling. Scuppers have huge chance of leaking. Oem bilge is only good under power, at which point your electric bilge should also be noticeably working or not, and you can run to shore. My $0.02

Dual rule's don't need oem.
I'm running a single rule without a switch [I just put a fuse in the holder to turn it on when I'm on the beach before a ride] and wanted the oem in there for when I'm not doing crazy stuff and don't turn the rule on.

I put the Oem set up back into a buddies ski, he also has the rule 500… personally I really like it, he never has to turn the pump on now and the hull is always dry.. still need the pump as back up and to vacate in an emergency
