Maybe im missing something here. why in the heck does people buy aftermarket hoodsand use scuppers or one ways,that is supose to keep water out. use oem hood seals, which we all know work.then claim they need oem flame arrestors? isnt the purpose of buying a wcf 900 hood kit to keep water out?whats the hype for oem flame arrestors.im runng after market and always here guys at the lake you need oem flame arrestors they are freestyle aproved.there has to be a performance loss.why would they make after market flame arrestors.maybe im thinking to much at work.

That's done on a square nose only. There are intakes on the front of the round that are covered to minimize water intake.
I got you about slut mod never owned a square. just wondering if i was missing something with oem flame arrestor. My ski never takes on water.after subs,huge fountains, everything. I also dont ride surf. Maybe its a surf thing?Ive got an 1100 gallon bilge pump and never use i try but no water really get in. Do others have problems with water in your hull and not from leaky scuppers?

I had a little bit of water in my hull after my first test run, i have NO idea where it came from, my top half of ski didnt get wet since it was only a test run, im not worried about it, i got a bilge. But i guess my case doesnt exactly help you any.

My ski had a 1" scupper the last owner put in plus a 500gpm bilge and it rarely ever got water in it except for fountains.
Last year I had two big cracks in the handpole mount and a f**ked up hood seal so I had to watch it a little closer.
I run a single K&N filter and only had a problem with water ingestion in the last month of the season as my seal finally fell apart and the temporary silicone job on my cracks let go.
This year I have a 2" scupper, all new seals, repaired all the cracks, slutty hood mod and glassed over top vents. I will be running a Prok multi fit with a outwears sock just in case.
No fear of aftermarket here.

Hood kits do help keeping water out, and more importantly where it flows when it comes in. It also is alot lower for some tricks a better looks, offers holds, and less wieght and more strength.

It's just THAT much more protection on your motor.
More shiny stuff people like that looks pretty. Honestly....try both stocker and aftermarket back to back....you cannot feal ANY diffrence.
AM uses a mesh screen around it for protection....good for flow....but easy for water to hit it.
STOCK uses.... 3 screens(most people take out 2 though) which is still about the same flow as the AM's plus they have a covering around them that doesnt allow water to go in easily.

i saw someones ski upside down 2 weeks ago. feeled up the partly with water got in the stock fa .stock fa upside down holds water like a buckett of kfc chicken turned the ski back over filled the engine with water it acted more like a funnel then protection. got my first 550 in 1996 always had aftermarket fa never had a problem with water due to aftermarket.

Pre-filters suck, and actually seem to hold the water there. OEM is the way to go IMO.

Yup: if you're going to spend a lot of time upside down with water in the hull then, on balance, you're better off with aftermarket FAs. That pretty much means surfriding.

I run the same thing w/an XFT hood on one boat and a modified stock hood on the other. No issues here and I suck at riding so I probably have more water in my boat than most.:smile:

My take: I have run my Roundnose with dual 44's and single OEM flame arrestors all season last year. Lots of flatwater freestyle, failed rolls, stabs, inverted subs, regular subs, plenty upside down.
They also saw a couple of days in the surf.
They ingested water on a somewhat regular basis - I am not really surprised at that.
This year, I am running a different motor (for the time being) with a single Riva 48 and a Round Aftermarket Flame arrestor (not sure which make) and outerwear.
Same hull - the only variable is the motor, and subsequently carbs and FA's.
Same usage - flatwater freestyle, and 3 days surf use.
It ingests less water than the other motor did. :dunno:
