I've had 3 go out on me. First one got fixed by M$ for free, second one I sold, third one I fixed with some hardware and heatsink paste.

link? I had a 3/4 ring, sent the xbox off to MS and they said the tamper stickers were messed with and they sent it back. I bought a used one last night but wouldn't mind having 2 if the fix isn't that bad.

I don't have a link, just google fix RROD.
The fix has you install some screws on the heat sink support to pull it tight against the chip.

That almost seems silly.

I've soldered mod chips to game systems before, I think adding a screw is within my abilities. Thanks.

The hardest part is taking it apart.
I think you need to enlarge some holes in the board, too.
Overall, it's pretty easy.

Best bet would be to just go with a PS3 unless you're into Halo or any other Xbox exclusives. They're loaded with more features and PSN is free. I play on PC because I hate using a controller for shooters.

Xbox media center and streaming media from the main computer its pretty handy (for me).
Don't think you can do that with PS3.

Huh, did not know that. Probably works better, too.

works pretty good... only problem I have with it is more a general network problem. We just have too much hooked into our network so whenever we run the media server something else in the house gets kicked off the network...
