One ring

Is there any engine builders using pistons with one ring as apposed to two for improved performance?

Or is the loss of time between rebuilds not worth the small increase in power?

There are some one ring pistons out there ie: seadoo, but the gain is really only at higher rpm (less friction) and not worth the faster seal loss for the average rec rider. A good seal is what makes power. With todays rings and watercraft rpm range, stick with two rings. Fact is you most likely wouldn't know the difference anyways.

Single ring pistons were common on 440-550 race engines that turned over 8000rpm. All of the newer larger engines 650 and up benefit more from increased ring seal over decreased ring drag. The crossover rpm is usually over 8500.
