one way valve/scupper

if i could as a stupid question. i am building my 2000 superjet and was looking at the list of mods that could be done and one of the top ones i have found is a one way valve/scupper? what exactly is this? thanks for the help

basically a 2" pipe bored from inside the engine compartment to the outside of the hull (usually at the back but sometimes into pump area) with a one way flap on the back. Any water getting into the engine compartment very quickly exits as you accelerate away - this coupled with an electric bilge pump gives a great set up.

However, the valves often dont seal completely allowing water to leak back in when the ski is at rest - or more worryingly whn the ski is upside down (particularly in the sea) any water entering the engine compartment quickly displaces the air out of the scupper - maybe leading to ski getting swamped quicker, for this reason there is a division between people who swear by them and people who loath them.

Usually flatwater freestylers use them , sea or ocean riders dont.

I ride on both lakes and in the sea, and personally have 2 x 3" scuppers and a 500 GPH elec bilge and have had no problems to date.

There is a variation where you use a one way valve that you can find in the plumbing section of the hardware store. These can seal more reliably than the type that have a flap valve at the rear (usually the one way valve is mounted further inside the hull).

Vaught - what kind of riding do you do? I'm guessing flatwater there in Missouri, right? If you want to get into freestyle without bent rods, I think a scupper or one-way is a must, along with a backup electric bilge pump. I doubt many on here would disagree. You'll be under water a lot, and you need a way to get it out of your engine compartment, fast.

One thing to remember also is that you need to take a look at ways to reduce the water flow into the engine compartment in the first place. I assume you have a Superjet since you posted in that section. Does it have a stock hood?

ya we do flat water and yes it is a superjet. i do have the stock hood but sealed the three air holes in the front. thanks for the input. i have a 500gph bildge already.

IMO I had the best luck with the ones from blowsion. The blowsion one I had did not leak at all. The homemade ones suck...My flapper in the one way broke off after the first ride .

Mine's been in there for 4 years - still works fine, and no leaking. Home Depot one way valve.
