Super Jet Opinions on drain plugs

Hey everyone,

I am in the process of rebuilding my ski for the summer. De-foaming right now and plan on using EPS foam with drain plugs.

I spoke to a foam distributor this week and will post a separate thread with his info. Great guy. He said that EPS should last many years with very little chance of waterlogging.

There are so many options out there on drain plugs.

Since I am in the process of building everything the right way, I would like to get some input on some good drain plugs that will last.

Any thoughts on your ideal or favorite plugs?

Do you prefer stainless, brass, nylon etc...?

Thanks!

Added 3/4" pc of nylon to the inside back of the hull then drilled and tapped for 1/4" NPT pipe pugs. Cheap and done.

I bought some stainless tee nuts, mixed up some thickened resin and glued them in from the inside.. Then built up the area under them so with the ski tipped up, the drain is the lowest point. I also used bolts to hold the tee nuts in place from the outside. Warm the bolts and rub a candle on them. That way, when you remove the bolts, any epoxy that might have squeezed onto the threads won't stick.

I use stainless nut serts. Drill a hole slightly smaller than needed, bang it in, and you're done. Even has a 6mm thread on the inside so you can seal with a 6mm button head.

I keep seeing skis with a tiny screw, mounted low near the chines in lieu of drain plugs.

The nut serts and the pipe pugs are great ideas but I wanted to ask about the screws as well.

It's hard to tell in some of the pics so I wanted to put it out there.

I am assuming the screws are there for draining purposes but I could be wrong.

Are there other reasons for them?

I have seen them on all kinds of skis incuding SJ's and SuperFreaks...

Are they just screws going through the hull with an o-ring for draining?

Just threading a course wood or sheet metal screw right through the fiberglass is only going to last a couple times. You can do any size you want, but the larger it is, the less likely for it to get clogged up from sand, or little piece of dislodged foam.

Those nutserts don't have threads in the first little bit, so it's a nice place for an oring to sit, and they are available in small sizes if you want.

Also, those tee nuts glued to the inside are available in small sizes as well, like a 10-24. I went with 5/16", mostly cause that's what I had, but it's large enough it won't get clogged, or have a bubble form and not let any water out.

Unfortunately, I have very little room on the left side b/c of the scupper that was on the ski when I bought it. The ride side has enough room for a versiplug or normal drain plug, but the left is a no go.

I need something small to fit near the chine on the left side. Since I would prefer the back to look uniform, I wanted to get some ideas from everyone.

Although many people are having success with the verisplug as a drainplug, I kinda lean towards having a system that I can seal up myself. I guess I worry about debris getting trapped in between the ball and the housing/cylinder.

I was using these on my old hull with no problem, I got them at my ACE hardware store, just used some 5200 to glue it in, and I did get a smaller button screw after I put it in

I used stainless screws on my old rn for two seasons with zero problems. And on my new freak I tapped in some 1/4 20 bolts and am totally confident in them. Rock solid as it's a thick area... Just snug them and you're golden. Less weight and very tidy. Hard to see in the pic, but that's the set up. My son also runs the same set up in his sn and it's been just fine. No orings, just snug them in and it's okiedokie.

Everyone sure has good ideas.
Since my hull is "cut open ". We're going to create a path , for lack of better discription for any water to find the plug.
