Outterwear fabric on hood intake...is that a stupid idea?

somebody used to make "caps" for the intakes on the stock hood to do just want you're talking about. I cant for the life of me remember where I saw them.

I am using that material for the intakes on my new hood. Too cold to ride, buy they kept water from getting past from a hose. I'm just nervous about subs and barrel roll attempts blowing them out.

I think it's a great idea if you can get the fabric to stay attached. :fing02:

Not only would it help with keeping some of water out it would also filter the sand debris for entering the hull.

Most flame arrestors either stock or aftermarket will not keep the sand from entering the engine because the screen mesh size is usually too large.

Someone needs to make some plastic insert with the fabric securely attached for an easy mod on the back of my hood. :headbang:
 
I had the name of the guy until I started typing. DAMN I am getting old...LOL His avatar has a front shot of a blue ski. I bought a few things off of him a while back but I still can't think of his name.

Anyhow he does sell the caps for the inside of the hood. They let keep water out but let the air in.

For the surf you would hardly notice the difference but running at full throttle you might loose 250rpm off you top speed with the pre-filters.

Just curious does anyone know what type of fabric the pre-filters are made out of? :scratchchin:

Did this on couches and it worked great.
The slight loss in air flow is nothing compared to how much water it keeps out.

We used to drill out holes in the front storage buckets on GPR's for extra air flow (helped with heat soak). The buckets were in front and low so any wake over the hood would dump water into the hull. I stretched some of that material across and it helped a bunch.

McMaster-carr has mesh screen even in stainless that would do that and it wouldn't break down. I think it is measured in microns I looked it up trying to find the right stuff for my hood but quit looking after a while. If you knew what size the fabric was then it would be super easy to make a cover that goes over the hood holes. But then you would need drain holes in casae any got past the screens then it could run out.

On an SXR in the stock ski race class you can't modify the hood to add another opening and covering the front opening in the hood reduces availible air so we did just what you are suggesting. We cut a piece of Outerwears screen and mounted it over the opening.

It worked well enough in fact, that we removed the Blowsion block off plate on his Superstock and did the same thing for increased air flow to the modified motor.

I realize your not trying to stay within any race rules and you're probably not working on an SXR either, but I just wanted to comment that it does work well. You can make a trick looking flange to screw it in place with or just Silicone or epoxy it in place . . . . . . all depends on how clean you want it to look.

its not the same thing, but JK used to run some little flaps on the rear openings of his hood so that when the ski is upside down, the flaps close and stop water from pouring in so fast... gave him a few extra seconds to swim to his ski... well atleast that is what TC told Andrew, who told me.
