Pad under HydroTurf

I am thinking about HydroTurfing my '91 SuperJet. I would like to put the padding below the turf in the footwell, but don't know which thickness is best. I know that they have 5 different pads:
1) 5 mm
2) 8 mm
3) 8 mm plush
4) 25 mm
5) 25 mm plush

Any recommendations?

For what it's worth, I just ride for pleasure, just doing a few tricks goofing around. No serious freestyling in my future.

I will never own another ski without the 25 mm padding underneath .
it kicks as when landing from a big wave but it's just all around more comfortable with it .the tray is very unforgiving with just turf .

Do yourself a favor and get the thick stuff :bigok:

Isn't 25 mm around 1 inch? If so I doubt you would want that. IDK
I ride goofy and the spot at which the letters are is on the left side so my left foot is causing the area around that to lift and rip.

EDIT: seriously you like it that thick? does it make your foot move around any due to the height?

i though 25mm was too thick so i uses 5mm or 8mm on my last turf job. it was okay unti l i rode a ski with 25mm underpadding and loved it. it really helps absorb the shock on big landings. i used 25mm on my new build and just shaved it down to about 10mm inside the footholds. its all preference. if you are just putting around the lake then 5mm would be fine.

If your turf is coming unglued for any reason it is not installed properly.
Always sand the pad and truf and clean with acetone before using the contact cement .

I love the 25 mm padding .actually that is the best mod I've ever done

Any preference between 25 mm regular vs. plush?

I assume that if I am not doing any serious freestyling that footholds would be serious overkill; time and money spent unnecessarily. True? Or is it a worthwhile consideration?

It is actually ripping it around the area of the letters... And Yes a few areas didn't get glued right(mostly an inch or so at the front corners), I did it when I was 14 so 4 years of use isn't too bad.

Do yourself a favor and just get the sheets of turf with no letters .
they're not paying you to advertise for them

I just redid the bottom yesterday with 25mm 'plush'. Yes it's softer than the normal 25mm, but not that different.

HOWEVER, it is way way way harder to work with. Cutting, sanding, etc are much harder to do. It's also quite a big heaver than the normal 25mm, probably double or triple the weight. I bet the piece I installed weighs almost 3 lbs.

I recommend the normal 25mm.

Based on the weight, it sounds like it is or is similar to memory foam? If that is the case, I would assume that it would "mold" to your foot better, and then immediately spring back to normal shape when foot is lifted?? Do you find it any more comfortable?

Obviously, you don't find it different enough to warrant the added difficulty of working with it.

I'm going to ride it for the first time tonight. (just redid it yesterday, gotta give it 24 hours for the glue to really set)

I use multiple layers of the thin ( and cheaper ) HT pad.

its easier to work with, and 3 layers of it is softer feeling to me than the 25mm pad, and much easier to work with.

build up the areas where your feet will BE with multiuple layers, use a single layer in the rest of the tray.

it feels comfy like a pillow.

Ah ha. I just used 25mm for the first time a couple weeks ago, and it was the plush. I thought it felt a little heavy myself also. And yes it was a pain in the butt to cut and sand. Next time I guess I'll use the normal 25mm. Altough I wonder how it is gonna hold up to normal 25mm pad.

Wydopen has normal 25mm on his ski and even just after a few weeks of riding in the straps, he has permanent foot impressions in the turf. I wonder if the plush will be more resilient to those impressions.

When we just did bluegtate's ski, he did two layers of 8mm and it feels plenty cushy, and was 10x easier to work with than the 25mm plush.

Good, glad it wasn't just me that felt that way.

I tried a razor blade, utility knife, Dremel with spiral carbide cutter, and my drill with 3M abrasive WHEEL OF DEATH (trademarked name), and nothing made it easy to work with. I did get it shaped the way I wanted, but man did it suck.

Seriously. Just cutting to shape, gluing, and then sanding the tail to shape took longer than doing the rest of the turf.

Get the 25mm padding. It is well worth it!!! Your knees and feet will love you! I don't do big jumps-yet-the 25mm padding is well worth the time to install.

Idunno about you, but my ski does not have much suspension travel. I'll take all the underpad I can. The 25mm plush does not break down as easily/quickly.

it took me a ride or two to get used to the 25 mil, but one flat landing was all it took for me to love it......
