Other Painting Questions. Please help!

k so I am planing on painting my jetski when i can get some time. I stumbled on a thread on google talking about awl-grip. Is this a good paint or will car paint do fine. Also what type of paint is best? i dont need to go all out on paint price because its just a 650sx but i had to do body work and figure i would paint it. Also i wanted to get letters and numbers that are not printed on a square so that i can paint one color, put stickers on, paint over then peel off when before clear coat. what is the best way to do this.....do i need to sand first coat so that the second will bond or is that not needed? Lol am i making any sense? i can explain differently if needed.

Rattle can IMO. I will never paint a ski again. If you ride it hard you will beat and chip it up. I say save your money and spend it on mods like a 701.

I just painted my ski after doing some body work. $40 in paint and clear. Even messed around with wetsanding (Just figured I'd try to see what it was all about) for $10 in sandpaper. Performance>Looks....

Just make sure it's prepped and cleaned good before you spray. If this is your first one I'd sand it down with 320 grit to straighten it out then wetsand it with 800 and you should be good to go. Also if your going to do a solid I'd suggest using a single stage to avoid spraying clear. As much as I don't want to say this cause we spray PPG at the shop, DuPont makes a great single stage in the nason line. Almost forgot, use a good primer after you 320 it down. Hope this helps some.

Truth, wasted couple hundred bucks to destroy the paint. This year i rattle canned it about 30 bucks

I will never spray another ski. The paint job I put on my last SN looked like a$$ after just a few rides, and I have already chipped and scratched my FX1 all to hell and I havent even ridden it yet. It will be getting a wrap soon, they cover all the bad cracks and bodywork. If its something you really like and you will keep for a few years i'd say just wrap it, but you said its just a 650sx, so im sure this wont be the case, lol.

^ haha yep! I am more into motocross then jeski's. I have been around the river all my life and have always had a jetski or boat to play with. I just wanted something cheap that i could play with so i got a 650sx. I love stand ups but dont have the money to put into them. Dirtbikes are a little bit cheaper and I am better on a dirtbike. Anyway I got this beast last year after the owner t-boned it with another one of his jetskis. here are pictures of ski before and after body work last year.... I spent more money on a rattle can paint job than I did buying single stage automotive paint. Takes a lot of rattle cans to do a ski... Automotive paint looked and lasted 1000x better too. I've painted a ski using one of the quart cans of rustoleum before and it worked pretty well. I used gloss black and had plenty left over as well. The gloss fades fairly quickly though.

Ok so its been a month since i put the clear coat on. This is the final paint. IMG_0862.jpgIMG_0875.jpgIMG_0871.jpgIMG_0872.jpgIMG_0873.jpgIMG_0874.jpg......It was a lot more than i expected. I think about $300. Overall not bad for my first time painting. Now all i need to do is finish turfing :) :0

I ended up going to a car paint shop and telling them what i was doing...they hooked me up with all the stuff i needed. I used transtar no mix. low v.o.c. lol not sure if that answers your question :p sorry it took so long to respond
