Pancake Pete - Best turfer ever !!!

Since clearly the worlds greatest turfers are here, ill ask my quesion here instead of a new thread. How do you guys make a template for your turf? Ive got sheets of cardboard im trying to plan out with but needless to say cardboard doesnt exactly mold to the ski...
I only have one sheet and im trying to keep enough spare to do my whole tray area and my rails. So far im trying to make a left and right gunwale template then a tray one and see if i can fit it all onto the one sheet with enough spare for my rails. Is there a better method?

Also any last minute tips? this will be my first time turfing (ski is a 550, no footholds)

depending on ski...

I use templates for all.

sides bottom, whatnot.. and depending on angles is where you start
so you can heat and stretch to make minimal seams.

as far as the turf tricks.. sand ski well and then sand back of turf...

60 grit.. nice and easy for scratches. then actone clean.

dont apply glue heavy either. let time to dry... NO DUSTY AREA...

will stick to glue and you be beat.

I sat my turf outside in the sun and noticed it really softened up and is alot easier to bend, should i just work outside to keep this effect going or go get a heat gun?

I use a hair dryer on high so i dont ever burn the turf...

but laying in sun helps too.

My last question i think...
What do you guys do when you get to the top of the gunwales? I plan on doing the sides first and starting from the front and working my ways from bottom to top front to back. I cut my templates bigger just in case i was off somewhere. What should i do about the excess? im worried about the glue getting all over my paint and then me not even needing to turf there.

contact cement should be pretty dry to the touch when applied. It also only sticks to another surface that also has dried contact cement. So as long as the contact cement on the turf is dry it won't transfer to any other surface.

When I say dry to the touch I mean that the contact cement is still a tiny bit tacky. A good way to tell that it is ready to contact it's mating surface is when looking at it at an angle and there are no more shinny spots.

Apply multiple thin layers of contact cement. Don't glob it on.

after i eat some dinner im going back out to the shop to do my left gunwale, ill take some pics so you pros can judge how i do :)
thanks for the tips guys, i can start to see it coming together in my head so it shouldnt be too difficult from here out.

Is that metal plate on the rear tray/boweye area stock on SXR's or did you make it? Is it bolted/epoxied/5200'ed down? Nice idea

I cut off to much from back of the tray for my trim-up last year. this year I get read of trim and deside to fix it. put the cutoff piese buck with epoxy and some screews and two layers of 6 oz cloth, but was thinking it's not strong enoufth. I am 6'2" and about 210 lb. So I put stainlees steel plate over it, epoxy + ss bolts. This will hold for shure.
