Of course smoothing, applying pressure, is needed when you are done building layers. But isn't peel ply an expensive version of heavy mill PVC? (it don't stick)
USCOMPOSITES. great supplier. Shipping $ sucks. Price generic 1708 glass fabric to chinese (prol the same supplier) AMZ. no ship$, 2 day. Epoxy and specialty only for USC!
Peel ply? I use nylon cloth. For core I would use dense PVC foam. Balsa is the most effecient but it will rot. Rohacell is expensive and looses half its strength when it gets wet. Nomex $$$$$.
Using peel ply as a final layer on a hand layup was probably the best advice 8ve been given doing glasswork. Removes air pockets, leaves a nice finish that reduces sanding by at least 50% as well as removes the blush left with the epoxy curing process that must be removed before any further work is done on the layup or part.
