Yes I know "talk to your builder", "Call Zach at PHP", "Phil Clemmons can tune it", yadda yadda. All good tips, I have and I will again. I also like learning from others and doing, its a hobby after all.

To the hobbyist and tweakers out there who have ran a PHP 1015:
  • What did you run with it?
    • Pipe and how did you set it up?
    • Carbs, Intake, Reeds (jetting/specs)
    • Ignition Setup
    • Pump Size/Type (prop, exit nozzle size, etc)
  • Learn anything it really likes?
  • Learn anything it hates?
I'll share my build when I finalize what I'm going to wrap around it. I'll also share my tweaks and lessons leaned along the way.

I'll definitely share what we do with them. I'm sure there's other ways to make them work or not but this has been sure fire.

Pipe...power factor. Setup wet if someone wants that instant snap at the cost of top. Dry for top end easier long combos
Carbs...Novi 48.
Reeds/manifolds...the newer 1015's all run big reeds with modified manifolds for a lot more top end when you need the extra flow
Ignition....total loss
Pump...155 prop depends on what the rider prefers
Nozzle...bored 65U veins deleted

Hope this helps guys tuning. Again I'm sure they'd work other ways like full spec carbs instead of novis but we try and stick to a recipe.

Secret is in the sauce!

Zack, what are you doing? You sell engines and then keep the spec's to yourself. Isn't that how its supposed to work?
@2lick, there are only a few out there who really know how to tune/build these engines. With Zack's stuff, I highly doubt anyone out there knows it better, I have sent my customers to Zack to have him tune on them, he is that good. Learning from others is good but when top tier people will tell you, why bother with others. This post has no smart a** or angry tones so please don't read any such things into it.

Thanks both for the advice and chiming in! I'm on board and totally agree with sourcing the right parts and right help, but we all have a budget. I'm more of a scrape up what I can at a good deal kinda guy. I'm happy with 80-90% of the power when I get it at 50% of the price. Not for everyone, but that's my style and what I enjoy.

@egbrig
I didn't read it in any negative tone, I appreciate you chiming in and the honest advice. I bought one of your TPE 1105s in the past as well and love the "package" mentality along with the information you shared.

@powerhouseperformance
For no actual reason, I've never looked into PHP motors of packages. Actually one reason maybe... I read the forms a lot and simply don't see much info on the PHP motors. Most of the tuning talk is on the DASA/TPEs. I usually buy used parts and try hard not to bother the builders I haven't paid a dime to. I took this PHP 1015 in on a trade from a friend. Kinda the reason I started this thread. Helps me, and maybe helps the next guy or gal that wants to buy a PHP new or used.

For now I plan to use these parts.

Exhaust Pipe
I already own a good complete RRP pipe. I plan to keep it and run it with the PHP1015. I understand the PFP is better for your package. However before I buy a PFP and sell my RRP, I'd like to see what I can do with the power it makes.

Carbs
I own next to new Full Spec 48s. In this case tho I opted to buy my buddies Novi 48s he had on the PHP 1015. As you say, sure the FS will work, but I hope I can get there faster on the Novis since you've spent more time with them.

Intake/Reeds
I have a Boyesen manifold and new reeds as well. However, I opted to spend some new money since I had a friend who needs the boyseen package. I bought a new PHP manifold and new Vforce 3 reeds from Jetmaniac. I may have to reconsider and call you to see what I need to do here.

Ignition
I'd like to keep my stock setup this year and consider TL in the future. I have a MSD Enhancer and TBM lightweight flywheel. This is an all around ski for surf, boat chasing, and last of all flat water. I may even deiced to play with the new Zeeltronics TL CDI people have been testing before going MSD TL.

Pump
I have a new 155 OEM 8 vein pump they put in the Yamaha couches, its machined on the outside to fit in a stand up. No ability to change tail cone sizes. Thrust trim and nozzles on ski currently (smaller motor in it now). Switching to a full RRP nozzle and trim setup when I put the 1015 in the hull. (I wanted to try something new)

Prop
I don't have anything yet.

Exit Nozzle
I have a RRP flowguard to add to the pump. I don't know what diameter RRP exit or turn nozzle.

Secret is in the sauce!

I love the sauce! I just don't understand why it has to be a secret.

My general frustration with the direction the sport has gone the last 5+ years is all the silos secret information. I get it our hull and motor options kick ass now and competition has grown it all. The information sharing and hobby side has taken a hit tho. PwC Today and the X used to be full of people learning and sharing. Even top builders chimed in.

Kudos to @powerhouseperformance and @egbrig for jumping in with replies on the forum to help a guy like me!!!

For what it's worth, I bought a used 898, called Zack and he gave me a ton of setup info. I also was a little hesitant to go looking for info without spending any money, I won't hesitate to buy anything I can from him moving forward.

I was being kinda funny, believe that quote was from Fried Green Tomatoes. When the detective was eating the ribs (or BBQ) and asking what made them so good, "Secret is in the sauce"................he was eating a man!!!!!!!!!

That said, I have always believed the best setups came as a package from one builder. Zack has his setup and most know he like Novi's............ Tricky likes FS, Believe Phil likes FS and the DASA 48's. Jr likes the FS.. These guys have put together so many packages that they know what works for their setup. I am like you and end up collecting parts over time. My first motor build was a TLR. Todd recommended using his mod 44/48 single conversion. Did not have the money, he gave me jetting suggestions, it took a while to get it set but once it did, it worked well, then I went to his single setup, called him up for jetting (got carb on trade) and he told me exactly what to put in there and other than a tweak it was spot on. Fast forwad 12 -14 years, upgrade to Blackjacks, Art hit it on the money, then upgrade to my current Dasa, Art told me what to change, only had the carbs for a few months. spot on.

But yeah, it has kinda got secretive when you had the XScream guys kicking tail. Good luck getting info. But the guys you listed have always been open with advice. I would say even though you did not buy the motor direct, they will still help out, it is still their motor. All these guys are straight up dudes.............. They would help out no matter what.

The rrp signs off a decent amount on top vs a PF when we tested back to back. I have a couple of water jet changes that helped that some but still couldn't match the PF. Not probably what you wanted to hear unfortunately.

Carbs
I own next to new Full Spec 48s. In this case tho I opted to buy my buddies Novi 48s he had on the PHP 1015. As you say, sure the FS will work, but I hope I can get there faster on the Novis since you've spent more time with them.

We've used some full specs before. If I was blindfolded I might not be able to tell you the difference between novis. I'm a lot more comfortable giving jetting advice on novis and believe they are easier to tune. If the full specs are dialed in, nothing to gain with novis.

If you have the non widened cases just stay with the v3's. It's a good setup unless it's absolutely all out.

Great idea on the Zeel. That's why we went to selling them and ditched the enhancer. The bigger the piston diameter the more advance they need for performance. An enhancer on the gun is about 23 initial...23 sucks. The right ignition curve is a huge bang for the buck.

We've done a good amount of tuning using a stock 155 to keep build costs down. Props need to be bent a believe it or not...less pitch than a comparable mag setup. We can point you the right way

Prop
I don't have anything yet.

Exit Nozzle
I have a RRP flowguard to add to the pump. I don't know what diameter RRP exit or turn nozzle.

Just a disclaimer for guys reading this. These suggestions work on the PHP engines. We've seen guys take our exact setup and try to implement it on a different brand engine because their friend's 898 worked great with it, only to find out it's so so. Probably the same can be said about other brands setups on our stuff. Bottom line is try and stick with what works and it will cost you less in the end and you'll enjoy a lot more time kicking ass on the water!

@2lick, Zack and I really do try to help and I see your perspective. All the secret stuff has multiple reasons: like Zack said, what works on one doesn't mean it will work on another so, don't want to be held accountable. There are very few real tuners out there and they make their $$$ with their knowledge so if they give it away. Acquiring the info takes a ton of time, money, research, failures so the info becomes personal, then someone gets it, passes it on and much of that info is bastardized or given away by those who need the ego boost but didn't earn the knowledge, so we hold on to it. Don't forget the building part is competition. Also, don't want to help some cause we just don't like them, but guys like you I am more than happy to help and I'm sure Zack will too.

Thanks, good points from all. Looks like I'll get on the horn and call PHP this week for tips on getting the rest of my package setup.

I'll share where I end up.

I love the last sentence there Erik. Like I always joke to you about, I'm like a bartender - if you're an a$$ hat I reserve the right to not serve you hahahaha! I still like riding more then building so it just means I gained a little extra ride time.

The secrets do hurt the sport I feel. What other sport do you need to Shell out $20k+ and be a full on mechanic to enjoy. I've had guys come to me with other engine brands frustratingly telling me what a junk motor it is and I go through there setup only to find one piece of the puzzle is throwing it out in left field - and believe me it only takes one thing sometimes to be off. As much as I'd like them to buy an engine from me we find out they're perfectly set with the one they have once things are sorted.
