Super Jet Piece of metal in cylinder

Hi All, Im new to this forum and stand up skis. I purchased an 08 superjet from a guy in florida last year. It has several mods done by wamiltons. Ada heads, msd ignition, ported polished, to name a few. I am calling them monday to get more info on what all was done. It was set up for freestyle. Anyway ....absolutely love the ski. rode it last summer and have had it out 2 times this year. I noticed it started acting funny.... seemed everytime i tried to crank it the starter would drag... thinking it was just the battery. I took both plugs off and tried to crank with no luck ... hooked it up to jumper cables for a while and let charge... then tried it again. seemed to crank but realized something was up because it seemed notchy... almost like a piece of metal was getting caught somewhere. Well took it back to shop and pulled head... on the piston towards back a piece of metal something (I check with magnet to see if it was acutally metal) was there and not much left but fragments. It was mostly on outside of piston. I figured it was a busted ring... so l pulled cylinder and both rings were still intact. also looked at piston skirt. nothing missing there. So my question is has anyone had this happen ? I am pullling engine today to see what crank looks like. The only two places left it could be is something off carb or something came off in bottom case. thanks for any help !

Ok.. found it. One of the two middle bearings started coming apart. When something like this happens... first thing I want to do is figure out how and why it happened.. was it something I did or just one of those things. First thing comes to mind is did i have enough oil. And yes I did. I used 93 octane pump gas ( ada heads with 93 oct domes) Also used yamalube for oil at 50:1 ratio. I dont even want to go there on the oil discussion...lol. (Just got done reading that thread.) I have raced motocross since i was 10 years old.. and most of my time has been with 2 stroke motors up until a few years ago and swithched to a 2010 450 YZF 4 stroke. That being said I am not a stranger to mixing oil or types of fuel. On a bike when we would rejet or see how rich or lean it was running we would pull plug and see what color it was. So I would assume its the same on a ski because it is a 2 stroke. When I pulled the plugs they were both a black color. In motocross that would definitely be on the rich side. I am very confident the oil mixture was not the problem.... also no other sign inside cylinder or pistons of running lean. All other bearings were in fine shape and no sign of excessive heat from running lean. At this point im ruling that out. So my question is has anyone ever heard of a bearing just going bad ? Again all other bearings were fine. I sure would like to figure out why this happend. Thanks for any help.

If you ingest water just before shutting the ski down for a few days there's a potential for rust to seize a roller causing a bearing failure.

Yeppers Dag..... that sounds like what could've happened. This is the second time out this year.. so if I were guessing I bet I had water in it when it was stored this winter ..im not sure how. I guess ill be given the ole yamaha a shot of oil before storing next year. Well im calling wamiltons Monday to get crank and a piston ordered. hope to be back at it by the weekend if im lucky. Thanks for the info brothas !!

mine did the same thing last weekend, all the needles came out and went up the piston and bounced around the same as droping a ring, ended with snapping the rod and the rod jamed itself into the cylinders and all the metal from the bearing and pistons were in the bottom of crankcase and blue a hole thought. had to weldup the crankcase, bought replacement cyclinders, and will be buying new crank and pistons nextweek or so.
lucky that you caugth it early iv only had my ski a month

Just Fog your ski whenever you let it sit for any considerable amount of time. That along with clearing fuel tank and fuel lines is all I do to winterize my ski.

Pick up some Fogging Oil at any automotive or recreational powersport store for $5-8. Spray in each carb for 5-10 seconds while running. pull the plugs and spray for 2 seconds in each cylinder and you should be good.

I know your newer here, JetManaic is a good guy to learn about. The sooner the better because he has unbeatable prices and customer service. He's got pistons and cranks on hand without all the expensive overhead. Check him out, compare prices, make your own informed decision. I'd shoot him a PM or look him up on here and look for the "Master Parts list" but he has just about everything even though they are not listed.
