No, I was told by a friend that sat through the classes and did the lab work, at Yamaha, with a piston stop tool, supplied by Yamaha. Is that better?

Of course, I'm sure most manufacturers keep tools around that they don't intend to use, he probably dipped into the wrong toolbox :shhh:

Hey, any official tool is better than the frayed rope I deny ever having used.

I am with Mark44 and the rest on the impact use. And why would you need to buy an impact. Do you not rotate your own tires? That kind of impact.

But for the couplers I don't understand how a 12mm flat dot on the center of a piston is better than a cushion of rope rolled down onto the top of the piston.

I use a pretty good piece of 3/8 inch poly rope that curls around the inside of the cylinder so it applies pressure to most of the squish band.

Impact and harmonic balancer wheel puller all the way for me. I've tried pretty much everything and this is easiest and safest way I've found in the past 20 years.

Impact flywheel nut off. Put on wheel puller. Use impact, hit end with hammer, a little more impact and she always pops off. I can hold the coupler with my hand and the impact does the rest.

I just did 2 61X motors last week that had never been apart from yamaha. Both came off easily and you know how hard some OEM stuff is to get off if its never been opened.

The 1/2" air impact gun I have is from a garage sale($20) and i use it on tons of things. Makes life WAY easier.

Most of the time they pop off that way but not always,I have one out there now that I have been trying to get off unsuccessfully for 2 months, heat, impact gun, tapping on the puller with a hammer, penetrating oil, nothing works

I just say that because when I had Kawi's, I remember some that were MF's to get off!

Worst one I've ever had the pleasure of taking off was on a 1985 Chrysler/Force 125HP Outboard.
