polystyrene or ping pong balls

I talked to that guy on the phone. You'll spend about $200 on balls I think, if you look around on ebay, you can get the plastic ones bulk.

I've seen the aftermath of polystyrene. Not pretty. Sticky, actually. Since the rear cavity NEVER seems to get fully sealed, oil and gas contaminated water worked it's way into the rear and dissolved the poly. It then proceeded to bleed purple goo out of any gap it could find.

I'd take pingpong balls mixed in 2-part over that mess, but I prefer my method at the moment. My ski is never in the water for more than a few hours on any given day, so sinking isn't a big concern. My foam filled carbon hull has sunk 2 or 3 times, so maybe I need to cut it open again and reinforce the rear, too.

Lol just cut a styrofoam job open and it looks brand new. Nothing against the fuel oil mix destroying the poly but if it did that how do you think the fish liked that ski? Lol. My skis dont leak and if they do i fix them as soon as i see it. There is no reason for gas and oil to be in the hull IMO

I aggree! Wasn't my ski that oozed all over a friend's driveway.

I would think that polystyrene would offer a lot more support than ping pong balls. The hard thing would be cutting it to fit tightly around all the corners, tight spots, exhaust pipe, cables, etc in your hull. I am guessing they are both fairly similar in weight and flotation.

Yes, if you pack it in tight it will offer support, but it is a pain in the ass. You have to cut each piece almost perfectly. I just finished doing mine. A hot knife and a grinder with a sanding wheel helped quite a bit.

Also, you may as well just cut out your whole tray. I don't know how you'll get all your foam out like that. Cut it all out and take a grinder with a wire wheel to the old foam. It cuts it all out like butter.

When I refer to Poly I am actually talking about the same type of foam as in the nose of a SJ. I don't know the "Correct" name but I would definatelty do my homework before a job as big as a refoam. The stock nose foam IS both water and FUEL resistant and will not melt when gas is poured on it. while actual "poly" from say Home Depot is not Fuel resisitant. I wouldn't use that Home Depot stuff for a refoam, seems like your Bro learned that the hard way.

Honestly I don't know why people don't just use noodles and run drains.

What's a Pfd made from? Why not some of those orange horseshoe jobs.

Pool noodles and even pfd foam absorb water over time. That link you posted for the Foam company looks promising. I'm going to call them tomorrow when they're open

That link I posted seems expensive though($250 min), but worth a try.

On a side note, I was at the homedepot here at the beach and decided to go look at foam sheets. They had the pink XPS as usual but they also had EPS sheets (although it didn't say EPS it looked like it, white 2 inch sheets and had that ball look. label on the rack had E/O foam) and haven't seen it at my store at home. Wonder if they carry this only at coastal stores or what?

I've been running the tray filled with various sizes of plastic bottles packed in, but have not sunk it yet. Reinforced the tray and hull sides from inside while the foam was out. have the blue panel foam in the tray sides. Still run the Std nose foam also.
