They used to powder coat everything ,ride plates, intake grates, carb intakes,it does ok in fresh water but flakes off like pint on a rubber bumper in saltwater.

Powdercoating is not awful in saltwater. Its the prep job and how you treat it which determines how its gonna hold up. If it gets beat up and scratched then the aluminum will corrode under it and force it to pop. So yea, rideplates and intake grates will flake. But stuff like engine parts and handlebars will last forever.

Ps, I do powdercoating.

Anodizing will hold up better, spray paint will be cheaper, powdercoating is the balance of the two.
I spray painted my ride plate and grate so if i catch up to you some time this summer ill let ya know how its holding up. The 550s just about lake ready, paint some and turf and im good. Hopefully i can hit up the lake in a week.

I pretty much agree with Fox. Powder coating is great if not better than anodizing. I ride 95% salt and dont have problems with it. You sure you guys are washing the motor down each time you ride in salt?

If you can get it done for free, go for it! Its all in the prep job. NO, NO sharp edges, deburr your edges and corners. Round em all off even if its a 32nd radius before you coat your part
Personaly I had the outside of my motor teflon coated and so far its holding up awesome.
