Super Jet Problem with solid top br8es plugs

I have had an electrical issue for a few weeks now, but I finally figured out. Ski would run great until I got out to the surf break and got some salt water in the engine compartment so I figured at had an electrical issue (start/stop) (coil wires) (magneto wires). We replaced the coil and went back out and had the same problem. I told my buddy Scotts that Watty had mentioned having problems with solid top plugs and he said no way. Guess what? replaced with some old removable top plugs and problem solved. We are still scratching our heads. I am running stock 61x electronics so I thought I would pass that along. As far as I know nobody in our riding group has had a problem with them on the 62t electronics and most are running msd or epics ignitions.

I had the exact same problem today. less than a tank of fuel and my ski was running like crap. I threw in my old spares and ran great the rest of the day. Maybe a bad batch? I was told solids were the only way to go but now?...

Put some dielectric grease into the plug caps and/or on the plug terminals.

Do you think the solid tops don't seal to the plug wire boot as well as the screw top plugs? I would not have believed jaxrider if I hadn't been there and seen it myself.

The solid tops are a different metail for the terminal than the screw tops. The OP simply removed the non-working plugs and replaced them with other plugs. Who is to say that the terminal type had anything to do with it? What if the OP had replaced the old solid tops with new solid tops?
The copper probably corrodes easier. But don't assume that a different type plug solves the problem - it may just mask the symptoms. Next time you go out, use solid tops and put dielectric grease on them.

Ive had bad NGK's on my 750sx years ago. (removable tops - new plugs) Drove me mad because it started right after reverting the ski to stock exhaust and OE jetting. Backfiring and running like crap .. Pulled apart the carbs and found nothing wrong. Replaced the plugs and the thing ran like new again.

I had the same problem in surf. I run solid top br8es plugs. I would go out in surf and it would run good for a few minutes then run like crap. I tried dielectric grease on the boots and nothing. Finally I narrowed the plug gap and it ran like a champ

891 has the right solution.
Plugs must always be re-gapped to .024 or less. Most plugs come gapped at about .032. The -11 plugs like a GP1200R uses come with a .044 gap. If gap is too big, the plug struggles to spark when a bit of carbon forms, that's why they run fine for 10-30min then start missing. Modified motors use smaller gaps due to higher turbulence in the cylinder that tends to blow the spark out.

Yep your probably right about the gap. I didn't measure gap. I will get scotts to check them since I put them in his bag of plugs.

I run Bh8s plugs and I always check the gap. the gap is usually right at .024. I didnt know other plugs had such a wide gap...thnks man!

Let me add one more point that all the old timers on this site are thinking and not saying-WE SPEND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS AND THOUSANDS OF DOLLARS ON OUR SKIS-CHANGE THE PLUGS EVERY 2-3 TANKS OF GAS!!! Plugs retail for 28.00 per box of 10 at Oreillys, Advanced, and on and on. Ask for part #3961. Br8ES solid tops.

Carbonx2 was dead on . Had a set on the bench with .044 gap. Thanks for info
Something I learnt the hard way, nothing more frustrating than hitting the surf with new plugs and they die after 20min.
When plugs start missing from too big of a gap, you will normally find that if you increase throttle slowly you get full revs but quick/large throttle movements cause it to bog/miss.
One modded motor I had would only run with a MSD enhancer and and a .020 or less gap, couldn't get it run on stock CDI due to high turbulence in the cylinders blowing out the spark.

change them out once a year, whether they need it or not!!!! :afro:

I like to give the screw tops a little crimp with a pair of pliers as well...otherwise eventually they loosen up
