Project Boat Anchor, Superjet

See, I told you all this was going to happen. I bought too much glass and resin so this followed me home today.

Well, the 1980’s superjet slowed this build down a little but we had a beautiful weekend here in Cali so I got to work.

Got all my supplies and built a little backyard paint booth.

Got two coats of epoxy primer on.

Then two coats of white base and finally three coats of clear.

I’m actually really happy how it turned out considering it’s the first time I’ve ever done base and clear.

The nose pieces turned out even better.

The only other thing I have cleared is our bare metal 51’ F1.

Also had this RN dropped off that a friend started 8 years ago and didn’t finish now his 20yo daughter is going to build and I’m coaching her on the build. Paying it forward you could say.

So I have been helping my friends daughter on her RN but I did get some work done on mine finally.

I added some glass to the inside of the rear gun walls where they cut them back so far just so I have some material to overlap on the rebuild. I also decided to plumb for dual cooling since I’m already in there but only plan to use single.
Then I sealed everything up with 5200 and after a week of drying I filled it with water.

First leak was the steering cable tube. Turns out they put a bunch of holes in it when they removed the foam the first time. Second leak was the rear rideplate insert, note to self remove all the factory epoxy first. Third leak was another hidden hole in the steering cable hose. I think I got all of them now but going to let it soak for another 24 hours to be 110% sure.

I know I'm late to this thread but I just removed some old registration decals and some Yamaha decal glue and this thing took care of it all in about 10 seconds. I started using some Goo Gone and cleaning it up with Simple Green immediately after but the rubber wheel was way faster as long as you don't press down too hard.

Crap! I can’t believe it’s almost been a year since I worked on this turd.
Well time flies so I dusted the old hull off on Sunday and finished sanding and shaping the foam.

I think I have enough resin but just to be sure I ordered a gallon from US Composite today. I’ll get all my mat trimmed during the week and shoot for glassing on Saturday. My goal is to have it ready for paint once it warms up enough outside to paint.

I want this thing in the water this summer even if our lakes are almost empty.

The picture with the water in the hull tripped me out since I couldn't see the edge of it on the walls. It looked like the shop lights were reflecting off a glass tray.

Which epoxy primer and paint did you use?

Sean

You going to be ready for Pismo?! :D

The water in the tray also tripped me out. thought you had some Plexiglas tray thing going on.

I still have the 1980's SN I could take but haven't decided yet. I haven't ridden the surf since 1996 so I am a little nervous but Pismo is only 20 minutes from my house.

Lots of people out there during the freeride to help if something happens or you fall off your ski.

Ok, got all my COVID-19 panic buying out of the way so time to start glassing, LOL.

Got the first layer of 1208 biax with mat down and wow this crap doesn’t like exterior corners. Planning for this I already ordered some 12 oz biax without mat from Jamestown Distributing since U.S. Composites doesn’t sell it

And even with my little space heater this epoxy is setting slow so probably only 3 layers today and they will be plain 1708 biax without mat.

Tomorrow will be the big push to get all the glass done.

My son has school and baseball canceled until April from COVID-19 so if I’m stuck at home this boat anchor might actually get finished.

How widespread is the virus in your area?

Got about as far as I can today. Cleaned everything up and blended the inner patch for the missing tray cutout with cabosil and resin.

Once it cures I’ll sand it smooth and touch up any low spots.

Then during the week I’ll cut all my big sheets of glass with each layer getting larger and larger for good overlap.

My plan is a base layer of 10 oz woven to seal everything then layers of 12oz biax without mat and maybe a few layers of 1708 no mat in just the tray bottom. Final layer will be 4oz woven just to waterproof.

Any idea how many layers total I should do?
This will be a 90% lake 10% surf ski with no big air or flips.

Well, got all the glass cut on Saturday.

Ok, so the tray got one layer of 1208 biax with mat then two layers of 1708 biax without mat to fill the hole from no tray last weekend.

Today was all one layup. First the tray bottom got three layers of 1708 biax without mat.

Then a layer of 4oz woven on the entire tray to seal out water as a barrier layer.

Next five layers of 12os biax without mat over the entire tray, sides and bottom. This was only layer 2 of 5 and each one overlapping further out.

Final layer was a single 4oz woven covering and overlapping past all previous layers for good sealing and smooth surface then covered with Peel Ply.

Probably a little overkill but should be pretty bombproof.

I will say the Jamestown biax sucks compared to the US Composites but I wanted 1208 without mat and US doesn’t have it.
The Jamestown has a lot more flaws and isn’t as smooth. The worst part though is there is so much and loose stitching it’s harder to get smooth and just lower quality in my opinion.
