Freestyle participation levels are seemingly affected by many factors. It's a large investment of time/ money to ride for 2 minutes. Some riders are intimidated by the idea of being all alone on the water, nerves, what have you. We all do our most amazing tricks when no one is looking. Riders who don't backflip feel they won't have a chance. And it seems that for whatever reason groups of freestylers come and go. About 5 or so years ago there was about 6 Xscream riders doing the whole tour. Now it seems like they've all moved on.
If anyone has even the slightest interest I would wholeheartedly encourage them to try a competition.

Hi Russ, Long time for sure!! maybe on the outside the big dollar skiis scare some off. But there is actually 4 freestyle classes
Jr Freestyle for the under 15 age group, Freestyle 800, for under 800cc on oem hulls,, Amateur with aftermarket hulls and up to 90cc motors, then pro Freestyle with 1200 cc limit. At the Racine event, there was both a kawasaki 550 , and a kawasaki 650 skiis competing in Amateur. so they do still come out for the love of the sport.
Just no where near the participation that there used to be!

Offering prize money usually solves all participation number problems. Brave the Wave in Lake Orion, MI typically draws about 15 - 20 freestylers due in part the generous payouts.
