If the pump shoe is already installed why do you need the tool? Isnt the tool used to get the shoe in correctly so that the pump sits tight against the shoe with the shaft centered in the engine bay?

No its used to get the correct shimming on the midshaft and the pump so it is perfect

Pump shoes arent always installed square to the hull
I've never heard of shimming a Midshaft , can you explain?

It's used to shim the pump so the driveshaft aligns perfectly with the midshaft. Pretty sure that's what Byeai meant.
