pump problems

so my pump will make a rubbing/scraping sound sometimes when i turn the coupler by hand. last weekend i was floating down the river and hit the starter and the motor was locked up. pulled it on the beach and saw that the motor was fine but the prop was sticking. its a recently installed hooker 10/16 on a boat i built from scratch. what are all the little things that i should be checking? pump alignment? do i need a washer to bring it off the blades ect.. when i rev the ski out of the water it even feels like something is holding it back. lots of vibration.

thanks

pump alignment is #1

but to note when I went from a 9/15 hooker to a 10/16 hooker on my solas pump I did have to go out and buy a spacer to move the prop away from the veins to make it work. This was found well before the pump was installed in the ski though (just spinning the prop on by hand, my prop hit the veins)

From what it sounds like to me is that the prop is rubbing on the wear ring which to me = an alignment issue.

Is it hitting the vanes or is rubbing against the wear ring? Most common is for the wear ring to get corrosion in between the housing and liner and swell till it contacts the impeller. You can file it down but it will keep swelling so you should start looking for another.

it feels like rubbing the wear ring, but i wont know for sure until i pull it out tonight and try one of my others.

so for the alignment... I followed the details poster here in the faq section. kept addign shims in the back until the driveshaft was centered at the bulkhead. I ended up with alot of shim. one thick engine shim and one thin engine shim on each side. the hull is a rn that is new to me. it clearly has two big zeros written in sharpie next to the rear pump bolts, but i figured since the pump / shaft came out of a differnet ski that the shimming would not be the same. does that sound right?

Most would probably disagree with me here but I've always installed the midshaft in the hull first

Then slide the pump in and install the front pump bolts

Lastly Shim the rear as needed

Never had a problem this way

Never tried clouse22's way, sounds like it would work. Way most do it is to put the pump in and tighten the front ones up snug then shim the rear until the shaft is centered in the bulk head. You can use a pry bar to move it left or right. when centered tighten all bolts and recheck. Then intall the mid shaft. Shim the midshaft to the bulkhead if necessary. Then shim the motor. Align couplers on all sides with razor blade. Then install dampener. Everything should spin smooth. Check it after each stage. I used two impros spacer washer on my 10/16 hooker to solas.

I did all of that upon initial assembly (to the best of my ability). I just now pulled the pump out and did it clouse's way. ended up removing the thick shim and keeping the thin shim on each side. turned very freely without any hint of obstruction. did notice that my dampner needs to be replaced, my couplers had a little play in them. maybe that could be playing into it. started the boat and it revved much better with less vibration and no "engine braking." we'll know for sure on saturday, bringing an extra pump for sure
