SXR Purchasing first Jetski - Need Advice

I am looking to purchase my first standup and need some advice. I come from a motocross background so I need something fast but reasonable. Thinking a ski that can easily be modded as I go would be the best bet.. I notice a lot of people don't necessarily run the latest ski's are some of the older models better than new?

We attend the World finals every year in Havasu and I would not be opposed to entering a race in the future. So I would be leaning more towards a race ski over freestyle. Of course I would like to have the option to jump and do minimal tricks as well.

What are some good models i should be searching for and prices? Where is the best place to look for used skis?

These are a couple available in my area I was looking at... What do you think?

I came from moto as well, arenacross, supercross, outdoors and freestyle. I did the bouy racing thing for a summer and then missed jumping and tricks. I started with an SXR and went to a roundnose Superjet. I was still able to rip bouys with my SJ and also have a lighter flickable ski for barrel rolls and stuff. The SXR was a great learning ski and made learning bouy racing a breeze.

Just my experience. If it were me I would just buy a 96+ Superjet and work with it from there. Great all around ski that can be modded to do whatever you want.

I race a lot so it would seem a SXR would be best for me, but I decided to keep my SJ because I like to ride other ways. The SXRs may beat me on the track but those tanks don't bother to go out to the surf because they know better. Not to say I don't want a SXR, I just wouldn't give up my superjet to get one.

I don't like the 750sx. Feels very heavy. I'd take a square over a 750sx.

Thank you for providing the great info and experiences. Can someone give me a little history on the Sj? Are all square nose 650s? And the round nose 705s? Which is better? Can that 1990 sj650 posted by atomicpunk be easily modded for later down the road?

I don't know about on the west coast but here in the midwest 650 squares in that price range sell in a day, sometimes hours.

You will be able to race and jump waves with it and have a lot of fun.

90-93 sj is 650 6m6
94-95 sj is 701 61x
96-07 is 701 61x/62t

Out of those SJ you listed, which is the best? Is a b-pipe referring to the type of exhaust, I'm guessing the bend?

Should i jump on that 650 or hold out for a 701 or something else? Im in no hurry.

Thanks for the great find! I am going to look into it. Is this a good deal? Do i even bother to make a lower offer?

Based on the those other skis in YOUR area that is a decent deal. I would buy that over those other two for sure. You couldn't pay me to take the 650SX....

It is only a 650 so it is a little under powered, but if you get out into the ocean it will be a fun ski. On lakes it will be OK for some tricks but lacking for buoys/racing.
I rode that model for 5 years and had a blast.

Make sure you check compression in both cylinders, on a fresh ski it will be 150 per hole. If less than 135-140 or 3-5psi difference per hole you may have to spend some $$ on it.

I would watch CL for a month or two unless you are dying to get out there now.

I would guess a 701 motor with a "Factory" B-Pipe (manifold and chamber) will easily run $2000+. B-Pipes alone go for $500 used and a dual carb 62T 701 is worth another $500.
The owner of that SN just put a few hundred bucks into that ski which may be why he is looking for $1500.
Good luck!

If you're not in a big hurry wait for a 701 but if you want to ride now that is a good first ski. I waited it out and got a square with a 61x 701, skat impeller, pro tec pipe, intake grate and ride plate for $1700. Bring a good battery with you to test which ever ski you choose but beware because the modifications are never ending and you will easily double what you paid for the ski in mods like I did

I'm pretty new to this myself but just from reading on the x it appears the most desirable motor is the 61x/62t. You can build them up the most.

I have a 650 superjet myself now and I must say I LOVE the thing. You won't feel underpowered your first year riding. I know a guy with an 09 sj (they changed the hull in 08) and he says there isn't that much difference on the low end (where you want the power) between his wifes stock 650 sj and his stock 09. The difference comes out when you get a b-pipe on it.

This is assuming the 650 sj in the add is functioning correctly. You want 140-150 on the compression gauge per hole. 5psi difference is fine.

A 701 square with a pipe is going to go for over 2000 so you won't really be spending much more money to upgrade if you start with a 650.

Based on my research my current plan is to b-pipe my 650 this year and next season do a 701 swap.

You can't go wrong with a 650 square. I like mine a lot and the one in that ad is super clean! I'd jump at it!

The fun is in the waves anyways. Buy it and take it to the ocean!

If I do decide to hold out for a 701. What would the prime year to search for? Square nose or round nose better? What's the difference on 61x or 62t, a little confused on this.

Square nose with a 701 should be cheaper than a round nose depending on the upgrades. 61x crankcases are single carb from the factory and dont flow as much compared to the 62t crankcases that come with dual carbs from the factory. But the combination of a 61x cylinder with 62t crankcases are the most desired set up but dont let that steer you away from a good deal a 61x/61x still work
