i know that putting a jet in the return line restricts the flow, but what is the purpose of this and when would it be necessary to do?

Mikuni SBN's have a built in return restriction. On some aftermarket carbs the internal return is drilled. This allows the use of variable return restrictors in order to achieve desired fuel pressure. It's just one more tuneable circuit.

only needed if the stock restriction in the carbs has been drilled out. if they are drilled and no jet then the gas flows right through.

If you need them, as I do with my Full Specs, the builder (Ed Brezina) will know what you need. If you have these call him, if you have others get in touch with the manufacturer. You should only need them in modified carbs.

I think my restrictor is a 60 Mikuni main jet screwed into a tapped brass hose union.

You also need this restrictor in the return line if you are using the old round bodied (diaphragm area) Mikuni carbs. About 1/2 mm or smaller works fine

That's what Ed told me to use for mine as well. You can screw a main jet right into the plastic fitting where the return line connects on a stock SJ fuel tank.
