Question about buying and selling ski's

I was just wondering, do you guys find that it is worth painting a ski if its going to bring in about 300 bucks extra, or is it not even worth the time? What are your thoughts? Is it better just to clean them up as much as possible? How much does it usually cost in materials to do a quick paint job and how much time do you spend? I know there are a million factors but lets just assume the previous ski just had dated or ugly paint, no repairs needed.

My personal take is that paint is a very personal thing. I also learned in buying vehicles that paint is typically used to cover something up. I want oem paint so I know exactly what I am getting into.

the ski im considering painting has a crappy paintjob on it done by the previous owner. Rattle canned..... I want to return it to close to OEM look. The ski will be painted all white. Might do colored turf since black and white looks a bit sterile but im leaning towards just black since, like you say, people get picky about colors and whatnot. I think I can sell it for 1500 without painting it, or 18-1900 with paint. Hell, I guess if it turned out looking real nice I might be able to get 2200 but that's if I sell it at the start of next season when skis seem to go up in price. What would you do? I should also note, this will be my first time painting a ski so who knows if mine will even look better than theirs lmao. The paint I plan to use will come from the fashion paint mentioned in this thread here: http://www.x-h2o.com/index.php?threads/cheap-spray-paint-paint-job.148278/

Very true. Ok, I think I'm gonna paint it. Im just worried if I spend the time and effort to paint it I'll decide I want to keep it lol. The point of buying it is to make some cash to pay for some equipment I need for the biz.

OK well I guess I'll post pics of the ski on Tuesday after I pick it up. Then you guys can tell me what you think you would do and how much you think it would go for with and without paint. If I post pics now one of the local guys may swoop in and grab it @icecoled007. lol. They said they would hold it for me but you never know.

I would try to sell it as is. Unless your time isn't worth a bunch and you think you can flip it out in a week, the season is almost over. Quality paint is expensive and a quality paint job is time consuming. What model ski is this?

I myself would not paint a Fx-1, or a superjet, or any other thing like we ride if I was flipping it, unless some special circumstance made that desirable like it looking like absolute garbage.

Think about the stand up community. We either want something nice for cheap, or not nice for much cheaper, or a cheap platform we can dump tons of money into customization. You could put a $300 red paint job on it, and a potential buyer then want a ski they can add sponsons, widen the tray, put a 140 or 144 pump in it and paint it blue.

Determine if your market is someone buying a clean ski for simple bolt ons, or modified FX-1. A local guy has a stock FX1, but every other FX-1 I have seen has hull modifications.

Buyers think the exact opposite. Why buy your unpainted beater for 1300 when i Can buy a nice clean good looking ski for 1600. Not saying it is a beater, but thats wha the majority will think. Most aren't members of xh20. Lol.

It's a double edged sword.... one guy might want a clean ski and 1600 is a good deal... another guy might want a clean ski but saw one on Craigslist for 1200(even if he didn't see a pic) and you're price is too high.... anotther guy might want a cheap ski that he can customize to his liking for 1300... and yet another guy from the X might want the same ski for 600...
the thing about selling something is simple, there's always someone looking to buy exactly what you're selling for the exact price you're asking... it's just a question of how long do you have to wait for him to show up... most times cash speaks louder than the item for sale and people just let it go.. my advice, list it as is, as honestly as possible for a reasonable price and don't be afraid to turn down a lowballers offer, cause most of the time that lowballer will be willing to pay for what he wants, he's just trying to get if for as cheap as possible... at the end of the debate you're still the one that can accept a low offer...
I sold a car last year.. had 10 different people call and tell me I'd never get what I was asking (2500).. I told them to give be their price, one guy told me the most he'd offer was 1200 for it... 2 days later I sold it for 2400... ask your price for what you have and don't accept less than you think it's worth..
I know.. I didn't answer your question on weather you should paint it or not.. but I have a feeling you gather the point I'm trying to make... just remember, you can always try to sell it without painting it, then paint it if you feel is necessary.. you can't unpaint it after it's already hot pink...
