New to the forums, but I've been on stand ups for a while. I currently have a Polaris Pro 785 and a 1995 750 sxi, and I've been riding them for a long time, around 10 years or so, probably a little more, and want something a little new and exciting.
I found a really good deal on a 1990 SJ that definitely needs some love, it's in pretty bad shape. I also know it's a 650 and it's going to be a slug compared to my 750 sxi that's been modified a bit with port work and stuff, so it needs an engine swap. I've been wrenching on skis since I was a little kid, but I have never done an engine swap and I was trying to price everything out. Looking on ebay, they have full 701 engines and everyone calls them drop in replacements, does that mean I can re-use parts that don't come with the engine like exhaust manifolds, intake manifolds, electric components, etc? Or do I have to buy all new/used stuff for that?
I was curious too if a SJ would ride differently enough to be worth the money and fixing it up. I know basically that the difference between the two is the Kaw is more for racing and the SJ is more for doing tricks. Just looking at the size of it it seems like it's a little smaller and a 701 in there ported, polished, lowered heads (basically a sleeper, I don't like to add pipes and stuff) would be a lot of fun. I'm new to SJ and Yamaha, I've always been a poo and kaw person and that's not good to be in 2015.
The 750 sxi was redone, gone through the engine, gel-coated (it's still holding up very well after a few years, I know some people have problems with gel coat on SMC), etc. So I've done one before, but not with an engine swap. I just want to see if I can get away with doing this without having to end up buying a lot of parts and putting a lot of money into it. I figured I could buy a 700 and sell the 650 on ebay or maybe here and get a cheapish engine upgrade. But I'd want to keep the Kaw more for going fast and set the SJ up for tricks, jumping, etc. It'd be worth it, right?
