Questions About Superjet

New to the forums, but I've been on stand ups for a while. I currently have a Polaris Pro 785 and a 1995 750 sxi, and I've been riding them for a long time, around 10 years or so, probably a little more, and want something a little new and exciting.

I found a really good deal on a 1990 SJ that definitely needs some love, it's in pretty bad shape. I also know it's a 650 and it's going to be a slug compared to my 750 sxi that's been modified a bit with port work and stuff, so it needs an engine swap. I've been wrenching on skis since I was a little kid, but I have never done an engine swap and I was trying to price everything out. Looking on ebay, they have full 701 engines and everyone calls them drop in replacements, does that mean I can re-use parts that don't come with the engine like exhaust manifolds, intake manifolds, electric components, etc? Or do I have to buy all new/used stuff for that?

I was curious too if a SJ would ride differently enough to be worth the money and fixing it up. I know basically that the difference between the two is the Kaw is more for racing and the SJ is more for doing tricks. Just looking at the size of it it seems like it's a little smaller and a 701 in there ported, polished, lowered heads (basically a sleeper, I don't like to add pipes and stuff) would be a lot of fun. I'm new to SJ and Yamaha, I've always been a poo and kaw person and that's not good to be in 2015.

The 750 sxi was redone, gone through the engine, gel-coated (it's still holding up very well after a few years, I know some people have problems with gel coat on SMC), etc. So I've done one before, but not with an engine swap. I just want to see if I can get away with doing this without having to end up buying a lot of parts and putting a lot of money into it. I figured I could buy a 700 and sell the 650 on ebay or maybe here and get a cheapish engine upgrade. But I'd want to keep the Kaw more for going fast and set the SJ up for tricks, jumping, etc. It'd be worth it, right?

I was actually looking for a good project for this winter. Plus the price on this ski I found is ridiculously low, I was hoping to buy something, fix it up, ride it for a while, and then flip it if I don't like it. I can just bore out the 650 too, I'm new to the Yamaha stuff and I'm not sure if the cranks and stuff are the same between 633 and 701.

Cranks are the same. You can probably pick up everything else from @Wizards Powersports for fairly cheap compared to ebay. Or even better put the 785 in her. :D
That's really good news. I ended up finding the groupk site and they said with a little boring you can open up the 650 cases and bolt on 701 top end. It looks like a 701 top end goes for a little over $100, and I can get some good pistons and top end kit elsewhere. That's way better than a full engine. I love my 785 but that thing is a time bomb and I'd like to ride my SJ more than a few times a year before I have to do something to make it run again.

I miss my old Polaris Pro 785. Was really fun on a buoy course for a sit down.
I agree, it's about the only couch I can ride.

Dont waste your time opening the 650 cases. You can buy 701 cases for 50$ or less shipped. Check out the parts for sale section.

Complete stock 61x 701's go for about 5-600$ on here with electronics, pipe and carb. Around here, the price jump from a 650 to 701 square nose is about $1000 so it's worth it even if you're just going to flip it.

I actually just went out and bought it. I finally got to look under the hood, I'm pretty sure it's a 650 6M6 but it's already piped, air intake, etc. I bought it from a boat store, they had no idea what it really was other than a stand up and the fact it said superjet on the side. I only paid $700 for it. The hull is in awful shape (can still ride it though) but it can be fixed and will be by next spring. Looks like I'll be around the forum picking up parts and stuff soon.

This winter I will probably bore it out and port it and stuff and call it good without an engine swap. I think with the mods and a little extra love with ports and stuff it'll run just fine compared to my 750 sxi, and having a little smaller engine might help with weight some too and make it stand out more from the 750 sxi. I can't pick it up until next week and I can't ride for the rest of the week because of medical reasons, but I'll take a look at this thing and see if it's enough to satisfy me or if it needs more than cosmetic repairs. Reading on groupk and looking at wiseco catalog it looks like I will have some fun with the engine this winter. I could probably flip it right now but I'd like to have the 750 for going fast/buoys and the SJ for low end stuff and jumping. I haven't gotten a new ski in like 10 years, I'm really excited.

Send that 701 to jetworks to have it ported and the carbs modded, best bang for the buck. Ada girdle head, bpipe mod chamber or a dry pipe, and ride.

If it has a coffman sizzler exhaust on it, open up the manifold to match your 701 exhaust ports and it will make for a great pipe.
