questions with assembling solas mag pump

im getting ready to put the bearings and driveshaft in the pump and plan on using the hot/cold method

I could not find this searching but what order and what direction do the seals go?

my other question is with grease on the bearings.
should I pack both bearings with marine grease before I freeze/heat them and should I fill all the extra area between them with grease too?
and fill the cone with grease?
or use a different kind of grease?
thanks for any help

Open ends towards the prop. Metal imbedded one last.

I greased before as you don't want to waste time between pulling from freezer and putting in the pump, etc. Bearings were heated to go on cold shaft then greased and refrozen.

I did my seals last but but I'm sure some one will say not to do that way. A 1" pvc coupler fits well to push the seals in on the outside.

Also bearings are supposed to go one a certain way, believe it's markings facing the tail cone, but I did one flipped on my recent rebuild. Not sure it really matters but will find out in time.

Edit: had seal order backwards.

KNY21 thanks
so metal one installed first with open end facing prop
then the one with the spring installed second with the spring facing the prop
the second one with the spring will end up being closer to the prop

Still wanted to know if marine grease is good and if I should add extra in the void between bearings and in the cone

hopefully someone will chime in on if the bearing markings go a certain way

does that sound correct???

ok nice were getting somewere now

pack grease every where
seal with the spring closer to vanes with spring facing prop
metal seal closer to prop with open side facing prop

so is marine grease what everyone is using??
does it matter what way the bearing letters are??

No the bearings don't have a direction.

You can use marine grease or oil. If you don't pack the grease completely it's going to fling out and not come back into the bearing. So make sure you pack it like watcon or you're gonna have a problem.

I prefer to use oil because it's always on the bearing. You have to change it throughout the season but for people like me it works.

I don't doubt that but it does state a direction in my Clymers manual. I didn't follow it but curious why it would say that, either for consistency or other? See item #9 and 11c.

As for grease I use seadoo xps pump grease as I can get it easier vs the Yamaha.
Thought I read somewhere pump grease is thinner than marine wheel bearing grease so it has less drag, etc. It's definitely more expensive so if not need I'll switch over to plain marine.

Good, I am sure you will be fine then. Very possible your pump has been addressed by myself (or someone else even) already.

Thread bump!

I'm following John Zigler's assembly method with my pump, but at the step where I'm putting the tail cone on I'm having difficulty. The tail cone won't seat down easily because the trapped air has nowhere to go. I can get the screws starting to thread but it feels like there's so much pressure in there I don't want to mess anything up. Anybody got any ideas?
