Quick release water lines?

They were popular with racers some years ago. www.mcmaster.com will happily sell you all you need. Yes, you can use them on water lines. Get the one with (auto) shut-off for your flush line and the ones without shut-off for your quick disconnect points.

I am looking to buy myself some for my X2. McMaster Carr does have them. However I am buying some different from the ones listed on Dustin's thread. The ones he has listed have the plastic button to release them. I will be using the ones with the stainless steel release button. I believe they are called acetal on the page. If you are looking for them. Simply go to the McMaster home page. In the upper left of the page the first paragraph will have hyperlinks of tubing related stuff. Click the "quick disconnect" link.

Here is my worry though... I have a female one already for a flush kit that has the shut off feature when it is disconnected. This is a must since you don't want water comming out of it. I have used it before many years with no problems. But on my other water lines, do you really need the shut off? Only thing I can think of is if you don't get one connected correctly and it pops off. You don't want your engine's main cooling line pumping water into you engine bay. However you don't want your engine going without water too!

I am buying some for both my fuel and water lines. I already have one Jet Works restricter/quick disconnect for my return fuel line. For the fuel lines, I will get the shut off versions both male and female. No need to be dripping fuel. When you disconnect them. For the water lines, I will just get the open versions for both male and female. Final concern is is they will impeed the water/fuel flow any.

What is your guy's/gal's opinions?

No need, you think too much. You plan pulling the motor every other day?

Maybe... lol nah I was just going to use those pinch on hose clamps. Figured if I used them, I would need to leave one of them a regular hose clamp or use the quick discinnect.

I also plan to run dual cooling with two seperate water systems. One for the engine, and one for the exhaust system.

So I can make up a home job flush kit where I can just unplug my cooling lines from the bulkhead, and hook up my own flush kit flushing both systems at once. I just need two connector halfs, a Tor Y fitting, and some hose. I already have the garden hose adapter. I will post pics when I do all of this.

Actually, I have the 5012k series listed in that thread which are the ones with the stainless latch. Not sure if there is much of an advantage to that but they were more or less the same price.

Shut off wise, I plan on not using them for my cooling system. I am going to put one on each of my supply lines from the pump and hook them up backwards (male vs female) so I can disconnect them from the manifold and attach them together when towing. I guess you could just do this with shut off valves but this way is cheaper. Other than that, I am not using them anywhere for cooling. I am also planning on installing a hand warming system which will be attached to one of my pisser lines with a T followed by one of the QD's with a shut off on the cooling side so I can just disconnect it when I want it turned off. For my fuel lines I am going to put the QD's as close to the carb as possible and only run a shut off on the tank side. I'm willing to deal with the little that will dribble out of the carb, but I don't like the idea of accidentally siphoning my tank into my hull. I am also going to hook my supply and return up backwards (male vs. female again) but this time it is so they can't accidentally be attached to the wrong port. Remember to get the viton orings if you are going to use these for fuel.

I called mc master concerning the through opening on the 1/4" ones because I was also worried about restricting fuel flow. They said as long as you go with the 1/4" coupler size (like I have listed in the thread) they will have an unrestricted 1/4" path for the fuel to flow through. I didn't ask about the 3/8" size ones because flow is typically restricted in these lines on purpose anyways and a number of people use them w/o problems.

You have some really good ideas there Dustin!

1) The male/female swap on the cooling lines for towing.

2) The Quick connect hand warmer idea

3) Putting the quick dosconnects as close to the carb as possible and then switching their orientation so you can quickly hook them up without tracing them.

I think these will all be things I take into consideration when I do mine.

As far as the o-ring goes, the acetal listed QD's says it is safe with methanol, I figured they would be good enough to use with gasoline. Do you still need the o-rings?

That's what I thought too, but mcmaster said the buna o-rings they come with are not safe for use with gasoline and that they'd need to be swapped out with viton ones. They come in packs of 100 so I am going to have a sheet load of extras on my hands as of later this week. I was planning on posting up in the mcmaster thread and offering to send them out to people for free (while they last) if they contribute something useful to the thread.

They are under $7 a set (both sides) for 3/8" if you get them with out the shut-off valves which I imagine is what watcon has on their site. That makes them less than 1/3 the price through mcmaster! I feel like I should be on their payroll...
