race fuel or pump fuel..what will you tolerate for power

Good advice on blending if your gonna ride fast. I blend 110 a gallon or so when going wake chasing. Not very many surf riders toying with buoys though. Also it's always better to fill up tanks at bp shell large carriers cut less corners with fuel. Blending is pita for everyday rides though.
Mentioned above using race fuel all the time would pay for a bigger motor is a good point. Don't think race fuel has to be part of the package when moving up to a nice motor but I certainly think a tl ign should be even in a surf ski. A good dry box solves all the issues associated with them. The added performance and safety are too inexpensive to forgo

I used 100LL AV gas for years up North. I mixed it 50/50 with premium pump gas and ran it in my Seadoo, Skidoo, SXR and Superjet.

I got a couple barrels for free every year so I ran it but if I remember correctly, the octane rating is calculated differently and it's actually not much better than premium pump gas. Just maybe a bit more stable with a longer shelf life. Although the stuff I was getting was from remote fueling dumps that had either been partially tapped once or was sealed still but had sat for more than 2 years. I had to process every drop of it before use and pulled a ton of water out of it.

Nothing but pump gas for me too. I run Shell Premium mixed 32:1 in my SS865 with no issues or complaints.

OCD, What compression do you run on your 865?

I run 200psi on my 771 on pump gas with no deto but that's surf riding also. WOT isn't for long periods. It's also a carbon hull and stock pump

If I remember correctly it is 195psi with 32cc domes. Mines been WOT more than a few times with no deto or failures of any kind. I tore it down at 100 hrs and it was perfect inside with no scuffs at all.

I started to mix Sunoco 110 with pump gas towards the end of the season. It made a nice noticeable difference in acceleration with only a bump in compression. I didn't get a chance to mess with timing since my season was over. With my short time with race fuel, I don't think it makes any power increase, but it gets you there quicker. It was especially helpful on the factory SXR motor I was running. On a powervalve motor, that exhaust port height is continuously changed and you can make best of both worlds - I wouldn't even bother with race fuel unless it was competition.

ktm,ive run a few setups now at 200 comp on straight 93 with no issues in surf and some river riding. Ive seen others try and run 220 plus comp on 93 oct and they have all been very short lived motors with 38s and bpipe they dont hold up even making very little power overall

I run VP 113 in my ski and will always gladly pay for the difference in cost and time to get it for the extra performance! And wear and tear......my motor ran for over 300 hrs before it was time to upgrade to our new lightweight 4mil crank.

I was going to say , dont you just ride surf? Surf means 200 PSI on pump gas with no issues. If its taking you a couple seconds of clamp time to get the grunt to unleash then its not the octane of gas thats your problem.

im having my pjs engine reworked with a fresh bore, complete freestyle port job, lowering the port timing, reworking the head etc... newmiller is doing all of the work.. we had a conversation or two about pump gas or race gas.. he explained the compression bump will result in a nice increase of low to midrange torque with no loss in top end power.. race gas here is avg 1.50ish more per gallon which will eventually add up in cost over time.. if i have to spend 5-6 more dollars each time i fill up i can handle it for the nice power increase

race fuel is more than 1.50 more per gallon here....avgas is only 1.50 more....race fuel will be closer to 8 or so a gallon....100 at the pump is almost 8

Race fuel has it's place, I'm sure.
Pump gas is easy. Easy matters when the waves don't tell you when they're coming. There are stations that sell it around here, but they're not exactly on-the-way to the spot.

I have to take this opportunity to thank Brian at "Thrust" for shipping me the wrong domes when I bought my head.
I ordered 33cc and he sent 35cc. (he sent the right ones for my ski). I called and he schooled me a bit. For which I am thankful.

I guess it depends upon your needs.

BTW: Race fuel has a very interesting stink to it. Almost burns your eyes! (riding behind somebody).
I'd like to know what causes this. "Higher octane" would be a lame answer. lol.

Race gas close to me in town varies from 100 octane for around $9.00 a gallon(out of the pump)which i choose to run as a 50/50 mix, to around $13.00 out of the pail (c-12 and other blends of vp) .av gas is probably around $6.00 now .sunoco also offers a race gas at the pump for good pricing ,but its membership only @ $9.00 for 110 and they ask for a closed course disclosure form to be filled out when purchasing as does vp at time of purchase . i should be riding today ,weathers great ! but this thread reminding about the price of fuel and other items has me better off watching the charger game at home, trying to recover from the money spent over christmas and the holidays .oh well .at least i ended up with total loss as my gift (HUGE ! been putting this off for years ,STOKED), now i just have to get it set up .any one wanna help ????

On a side note: If you have a Jeep TJ Wrangler that cuts out occasionally and hick ups at various speeds, you have to reset the computer to learn the ethanol fuel characteristics. I ohmed all my sensors and was at my wits end, but the disconnected the battery and let it set 24 hours, now all is great!

I need to try this!!

My engine is at 195psi and I run 50/50 or AVgas in a pinch. I live a mile from an airport so getting AV is easy, unfortunately my new engine is at 200psi and I need to decide if I want to go straight CAM2 or get some new domes. I understand the surf guys running lower octane, but I'll never do it. I ride wide open for extended periods of time chasing boats and would much rather pay a few dollars more for gas, or buy new domes and have my engine properly set up for the octane I'm running, than count to 3 and let off the gas or worry about grenading my engine.

interesting input here,300 hours before a rebuild on that fuel,I can imagine the setup and comp it supports...um thats far above the norm, some secret sauce going on there. seems some of the flat water guys use race fuel, makes sense if ya have to push it to ragged edge to make good power up top with some of the higher port timings these motors seem to have, and still be able to get low end punch and responce, high comp, timing and race fuel is prolly mandatory.
Seems most surf guys use pump fuel for the ease of access and cost of fuel, river guys chasing wakes on top end run 50/50. Ive done this also at 200 psi, found it not as nessary when adding alot of water to the pipe with top screw for the purpose of taking some power out of the top end.motor ran much cooler and still could chase fast wakes, easy 5 min tuning changing, that and pulling the jetworks valve for wake chasing worked very well
