And if you have a big SSxi/zxi/ss ebox everything swaps right into the sxi style box and a brand new box from the deal is only $100! I was shocked at that price since I have seen used cases go for that. Never hurt to look up part numbers

What does the brace prevent? Is there a flaw in the original X2 design that this addresses or is it just for guys that beat their skis in the surf?

It braces the hull, the X2 has a ton of flex due to the big hood open area.
And if you are running a 750 or 800 the ebox mount give you a nice clean safe place to put it.

I am Happy to announce Rad Dudes Ebox mount Surf Braces will now be used on the X2s for the Water World Show at Universal studios!
They are upgrading the X2s over to 800s and Rad Dudes surf braces are going on each ski.
Mark Gomez who performs in the show and Rides the X2 called a few weeks ago about upgrading the skis. After a few phone calls with the lead mechanic there, the surf braces are now being used on the skis!
