ramping the fingers 62t

why do people ramp the fingers? i have my engine apart right now and took the intake off to inspect the reeds. the ramp stuff is seperated from the fingers and seems to be lifting. its like jb weld or something. does anyone know what this stuff is? i want to replace it myself.

IMO the only people who put epoxy anywhere in a motor are the ones who can (or should be able to) afford the downtime and money to get new stuff and rebuild more often than needed. I had the same exact thing happen once on a 8mm stroker. It was not necessary (the guy I bought my motor from was told this by the builder ((super reputable Paul Lehr)) and it lasted about 5 seconds!) I can also assume (and many here agreed) this very stupid epoxy then found its way in to my crank bearings and took out my billet stroker crank.

No thanks! Stock porting and surf only for life for me!

I've been running case porting with fingers filled for years with no issues. I think it depends on the prep and the type of filler used.

Xscreams epoxy work is like a work of art. But you've gotta pay.

Even the best builder will tell you it is not permanent.

Aluminum castings are permanent...pending a catastrophe of course.

It helps of course to properly prep the aluminum for more durable bonding. Etch the alu. with Alumaprep (formerly Amchem, now Henkell) and then treat with the required conversion coating-

No offense but if you dont know what it is, dont start ripping it apart. You obviously have a fun motor and im sure you want to keep it fun...just have it rebuilt buy a builder

Stuffing the crankcase will increase primary compression which usually makes the pipe hit harder. If the filler is peeling then warm up case to 200 and rip it out. You wont miss it.

If you sand blast the case first then put it in when the cases are warm you will not have an issue unless you let it sit with water on the crank and corrosion gets in there.
I use jb weld and have found it to be very good. The ramps have nothing to do with stuffing but more to do with aiming the flow of the air/fuel mixture towards the transfers

like wax said, it will separate way easier if you dont heat up the cases to get surface condensation off. i blowtorched all the moisture out of mine then right when it cooled down epoxied it. wont come off for years.

LOL this thread is reminding me of years of chasing down solid answers on case modification and epoxy reinforcement durability.

"It helps if"

"Won't come off for years."

Re the case stuffers. It was proven along time ago that increasing the pressure inside your cases didn't help so much as it was the pipe causing the low pressure up top that was making the fuel air mixture move up the transfers

Yup I know they do. I found this out about ten years ago. Was trying to figure out where all the power had gone in a ski I was tuning. Took the stuffers out and gained everywhere. I have a theory behind it but that's another story
