They went by Amateur II rules, 900cc and aftermarket hulls allowed. I don't know the specifics of the rules, but he was legal.

Michael, watching you and Jason win this weekend was a true thrill for me. I am so proud of both of you that my heart could just explode. I waited a long time to see the both of you win titles. I knew you could!! It was just a matter of time. Michael your perfomance was absolutely beautiful. I will remember that day to my dying breath. Thank you both for such a memorable event.
