First of all this is at least a two year old thread. Why the mods removed the thread dates, I don't know. Anyway, moving forward, personally coming from a long surfing background, my goal has always been to eliminate the bad side of surfing (Paddling and sitting) and replace it with more wave riding. This is why Jet skis have always appealed to me, they are just that, powered surfboards. Problem is the best handling jet ski is a pig compared to a surfboard. When I came across this vid of the Wave Jet two years ago it looked very promising. Yes the guy surfing in the promo vids wave riding skills are less than exciting, but I thought they purposely used a mediocre surfer because there target audience would mainly be the older surf crowd, guys that can't paddle so well anymore and have the cash to afford one. Even if the Wave Jet is a pig that handles poorly ( I wouldn't know, I never got to try one, they never answered my requests for a demo) it's an ultimate step in the right direction, powered surfing. IMO paddle surfing will become obsolete in the not too distant future. It's just a matter of time before new technologies will advance powered surfboards so that they handle as well as current surfboards. Unfortunately powered surfboards would create an even bigger problem because good shaped ride able waves are already a scarce commodity. What we really need is to dot our coast lines with manmade reef/point breaks. We can put a man on the moon but almost nothing has been done to shape our coast line to offer great shaped waves for the masses. If good shaped waves were plentiful there wouldn't be such a fight over who has rights to them or even a need for a motor to increase our wave count. I'm surprised its already 2013 and the surfing community has done so little to promote man made reefs.

There was some talk of a man made reef in my town but it was just a fleeting idea. The cost is huge and not many surfers have that kind of coin laying around.
I migrated away from standard paddle surfing after I had open heart surgery which left big scars down my chest and drainage tube scars below my rib cage which really hurt like a son of a gun after laying on a surfboard for any length of time. Now I"m almost 100% jetski surf and some kitesurfing thrown in.
The powered surfboard looks like a lot of fun. Wish I could try one.
