Refoaming and Reinforcing

I will be picking up a square nose this week and am wanting some ideas on refoaming. I was thinking about using 1 or 2 layers of carbon to reinforce the engine bay and foot tray. The refoaming part i'm not to sure about and I have read a bunch of different posts. I was thinking of using 2lb foam but not sure if that will be strong enough even with the carbon reinforcement. I am looking to lighten this ski as much as possible without loosing too much strength. What should I do?

What do you plan on doing with the ski?
The lightest reinforcement is no reinforcement at all.

I plan on droping a 701 in it and using it for flatwater freestyle(live on a lake)...I am not very good yet but I plan on going all out with this ski.I guess a 3/4 barrel roll time after time will take it's toll on the hull...I want to refoam it and reinforce it with carbon twill but not sure what poundage of foam and how many layers of carbon.

It seems you may want to reinforce then. Go with Carbon if you must have that look, but you will not be saving any appreciable weight. And it will be more expensive than glass.
Either way is fine, just be aware that there really aren't any benefits to carbon reinforcement.
2lb or 3lb foam should be fine.

As far as other weight savings, search for FL-Cracker's thread on just this topic. He did a nice write-up.

What Matt said but I like to use 3lb I have found that to hold up better under compression.

Carbon would be expensive unless you just want the looks I would use fiberglass matte w/ epoxy resin and if you gotta have the carbon looks use one layer (last layer) carbon. I would reinforce the handlepole mounting area and hood seal area only if it were me. As for refoaming, it is not fun so if it doesnt need it, I would say drill some hole at lowest point and see if there is water in there, if so drain it and let it dry a little then fill the holes and seal all entry and exit points as best as possible and pray she stays water free.
Reinforcing the tray can be done easily when instaling foot holds but definateley not w/ CF, that would just be silly right there.
I wouldnt reinforce sides except hood seal area (like 3" strips) under hood seal channel. Unless of corse you have the time and money and like the looks of CF sides in your bilge area. :biggthumpup: Just my opinion.

Well the hull I bought has footholds already in it but I would feel much more comfortable if I know they are 100% sealed in there. And it will be a winter build so I will have plenty of time to work on it..Oh yeah I almost forgot...I want to install a 2" one way and have a scupper as a backup. So I will be right there; might as well put new foam in...

I just refoamed my sn. Wow that sucked azz. Only cool part was seeing the foam rise. I would advise not to unless you needed to

LOL...Never rode an sxr but i'm sure the superjet is a lot better for freestyle....I know it may suck to refoam but I actually enjoy working on my ski....The harder the project the more fun I have....Its great to see your work slowly start to turn out into a bad ass ski.

Along with many other's on here I got all my glassing supplies from uscomposites.com . I used 17 oz knytex biaxial for everything ( I ordered 6 yards of it, you will need less if you're not reinforcing the sides.) Then just buy one of their epoxy/hardener kits and you're good to go.

When you refoam you'll want the 16 lb. kit of whatever lb. foam you choose (i got 2 lb for my square)

yes, the SN is not fiberglass or polyester. It is a plastic molded type substance (cant remember the name of it) and bottom deck is SMC again plastic molded. There is no fibergkass on it. Epoxy resin is all that will bond. With fiberglass you can use polyester resin as it will chemically bond to the fiberglass that is also polyester based. Polyester is not an epoxy. With epoxy you basically glue it on, there is no chemical bond.
