Newer SJ's like yours also have SMC bottom deck so epoxy resin is best for adhesion...has anyone had fiberglass resin hold on SMC for as long as this thread is old ?

we use pretty much fiberglass resin here.....IMO epoxy is overkill

on my fx we used 1 layer 17 oz biax, then still have the c/k to add on....

with bill's 24/7 ski we used 2 layers of 17 per side, plus some other selective reinforcement with chopper glass....all done with FG resin

I bought the 24/7 ski in the above post. if it only had polyester resin it held up fine. I beat the hell out of it fore a few years and the reinforcement never delaminated from the SMC. That said, it must have been preped very well and the adhesion was more mechanical than chemical.

knowing that, I'd still use epoxy resin for future projects.

Secondary bonding always relies on a mechanical linking to a surface or cured material. Chemical linking occurs in the original building and curing of a part (primary bonding). Once that cures all bonding is secondary.

That's why we use epoxy because it has the best secondary bonding adhesion. But as always, proper surface preparation is always important.
