Remember to check your water lines…

I wasn’t paying attention to my pisser and overheated my engine. The hose from the pump to the aluminum pipe that runs under the tray broke. Thankfully many parts could be reused and I had almost all of the parts needed for a rebuild. It may have been a blessing in disguise as it had been bored .5 over by a previous owner but the pistons rings were never replaced. The original exhaust pipe and waterbox were torched so I had to buy a b-pipe for this ski. It was the only logical solution lol. The rebuilt engine has just over 5hrs on it and is going strong.

3 mins into my first surf ride on Saturday at Pismo I noticed i only had one pisser. Pulled the ski out before melting my exhaust and found that the Brass 90 in my b-pipe header had vibrated overtime until it was tapered enough to get blown out of the hole (I suspect because I used paste thread sealant instead of tape).. I pulled the header off and inspected the female threads (which luckily were still there!) then replaced the fitting with a fresh one from a buddy's toolbox wrapped in the thicker ptfe tape...

Flushed my ski in the Delta last week and everything was fine until loading onto the hitch hauler and it wouldn't crank. I ordered a starter relay and while waiting for shipping I pulled the header back off to inspect my ground connection at the starter bolt, figuring it was probably corroded from salt water.

Luckily in doing so I discovered that one of the brass 90's in my exhaust manifold has also vibrated loose and is about to shoot out as well.. Time to pull the tank and chamber so I can get to the manifold and swap out the fittings...Then start chasing my electrical issue. I got a bit luckier than you I'd say.

Edit: after it wouldn't crank, I rotated the prop 360 degrees with the plugs out so I know it's not seized... Still not sure if the problem is the relay, the starter, or the bendix. I can hear the relay click in the ebox.

If you used an oem 90 from a kawi, the threads are smaller than the aftermarket 90s that the B pipe uses. I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. I threw out the oem and put inan AM in about 2 seconds. I think I was using the oem one that had the oem flush fitting

The fittings I used were the ones supplied with the wax headpipe/manifold so I would assume they were the correct thread. I'm hoping that ptfe tape vs. paste will keep the vibration from wearing out the threads this time.

Thank you for the heads up! Need to go check mine now.

Checked the Waxhead Exhaust System Web page https://www.waxracingproducts.com/c...acing-complete-yamaha-kawasaki-exhaust-system

and it doesn't look like the Brass Water Fittings are included in any of the Kits, be it the Complete Exhaust, Head Pipe or Manifold.

So it appears that the Buyer is supposed to supply the Brass Cooling Fittings...which is where the wrong type of Threads could have been used...

Did you buy the Exhaust System/Head Pipe/Manifold new and directly from Waxhead?

@waxhead Do you include the Brass Fittings with any of the Exhaust Parts? What TAPERED Thread Pipe (NPT, BPT) is required?

I bought both the manifold and headpipe direct during the pre-orders, fittings were included. Im pretty sure they are NPT.
