SX/SXi/SXi Pro Replaced my stator, now my engine runs backwards...

So I just replaced the stator on my 750sx, and now the engine starts running backwards. It sucks water in through the pump and out the intake grate. I'm really confused as the starter engages in the right direction, but then the engine kicks and runs in the wrong direction. The stator only bolts on one way so it can't possibly be misaligned can it? Any help appreciated!

Okay... If I tap the button quickly to start it, then it runs in reverse sometimes. If I hold the button, it will run normally but the starter stops for a second as if there's resistance against it.

Timing that's too far advanced can make the engine run backwards, in some cases. Are you sure you put the stator back into the exact same position as before?

Keys fine, didn't leave it running long that way. And I'm running an msd enhancer without a timing advance so it shouldn't have advanced that far. As far as I can make it out the stator only went on in one position so it isn't possible to get it wrong. I can get it started normally but I have to hold the button for a second and it feels like the starter stops for a second and then it fires up. If I just tap the button quickly it will run in reverse.

I bolted it up in the exact way it was so I hope it's not bad. It's a brand new stator from sbt. I'm about 90% sure, what can cause it to shear? I haven't tooken the flywheel off at all and didn't run it long backwards. Plus it runs normally when it starts in the right direction
