Any educated opinions as to which method of return line restriction is preferable?

Definitely not #1, because you're restricting the incoming fuel, not the return line.
I am not sure what's going on in #2. What is that?

#2 looks like it is threaded into a fitting on a kart tank (?) which will work just fine. Definitely not #1.

Yeah....I realize that restrictor is on the inlet spigot. That's a throwaway carb I was practicing on.

The other picture...it's on the return spigot of the cart tank.

Ace sells a 1/4 to 1/4 barb, buy it and run the jet in the incoming side, splice in return line and done. easy to remove and clean if need be as well.

I've already got the return spigot on the tank tapped and ready to go.

So, I guess my main question is... retriction is restriction, right? It shouldn't matter which end the restictor is on, right?

My OCD has me obsessing that it should be on the carb end, for some reason.

It creates proper fuel pressure for the carb. Most carbs have built-in restrictors,.but some aftermarket carbs do not. So you need to restrict the return line.

My Novi doesn't have a restrictor in it. I was getting a weird lean sensation after I backed off from WOT. It's hard to describe...but, it didn't want to return to idle as seamlessly as I'd like. If I immediately blipped the throttle a few times... it alleviated the symptoms.


It was as if all of the fuel was being pushed immedietely back out the return line, leaving the fuel chamber starved after WOT.

I've got a 110 main jet in there now, and it's much better. I'm going to try a 60 - 80 this weekend.

Other than that...I've got the jetting pretty much dialed.

One thing to think about with the restrictor on the tank fitting... If that comes off and goes into the tank, it may take you quite a while to really figure out what went wrong.

Having a restrictor on the carb like you have is going to reduce fuel pressure
You have it on the inlet side of the carb you need it on the outlet side
I run them off the carbs to a t then put a restrictor in it. the same system novi use

I would put it at the carb like #1 except put it on the return nipple.
The 2nd way I would do it like Brian said with a splice connector, keep the hose between the carb and jet short as possible.
The reason I don't like it at the tank as there's too much fuel line between the carb and jet.
When the lines are that long the fuel pressure can pulse and fluctuate with the lines bouncing all around.

That was just a carb he had lying around, it just was testing the installation of the jet. He already posted that he knew it was on the intake not the return outlet.
