Return of the Lone Star Freeride!

Tell me everything I need to know. I'm thinking about making the drive. Where to stay? cheep motel in Winnie or air B&B on the beach? Do I need my 4x4 truck or can I get by with my car and a trailer? Is it worth a 17 hour drive?

17 hour drive? No. If you're N Dakota you'd be better off seeing if TCJetpilots (Twin Cities) are having an event.

I flew to Daytona for the freeride but didn't bring skis and now I've got the itch. I was looking for the next opportunity to travel south and ride this winter. Pismo is 27 hours away. TCJP has the sortie and I'll continue to attend but that's late summer. I guess asking if it's worth it is a little bit of a debate. It was -9* this morning so driving to warmer weather is a little more appealing to me than others.

It is worth it even if the surf is small

This is cool! Way to go @The Penguin ... This is the OG Lone Star!
What is it, like 17~18 years since the first one? I can't remember what year it was when @Glory_Freestyle Glen and I came down the first time, maybe 2004-ish? There were very few in attendance that year... but it grew... I know 2006 was a "Big" year (both attendance and Surf) when @Jr. and @Big Kahuna came out along with Ronny Mac, @yamaslut and many others I'm forgetting (or my memory is completely off, correct me if I'm wrong!)... waves and wind were gnarly that year too! ((( Chocolate Milk Washing Machine! ))) But of course we have seen it flat as a swimming pool too!

The oldest photo thread I could find on here from 2006... https://www.x-h2o.com/threads/more-texas-pictures.1960/

Our beaches aren't like Daytona. You can actually be on and drive on our beaches at night.
Crystal Beach ain't Daytona, and were ok with that.
If you can make it, you will enjoy it.

It’s got to be longer ago than that, but I can’t find anything older than 2006 either. I remember going to my first ride at the beach and remember that Joe Kinney was there. I want to say it was several years before he was hurt in 2007. We had been riding standups for only a couple years at that point, so it had to be very late 90’s or early 2000’s? I know we were riding standups by ‘97 or ‘98. I don’t think there was any kind of name for it, but I do remember gathering at Penguin’s house. I won a T-shirt in a random drawing.

What say you, Penguin? When was the first Texas ride?

Edit to add that I found mention of Crystal Beach rides as far back as 2004 on the PWCToday forum. I can’t remember when this forum started. Maybe the rides pre-date this forum?

Joe Kenny came in 2005. We were there (Me, Chris, Tricky1 and Casey.) The X started Daytona 2006 Weekend!

LSFR does predate X-H2O. It originated on PWCT, probably called "Texas Motosurf" or something like that. We may have had a couple rides before the X was created.

I found reference to one of our first rides on this site and it was called "Texas Motosurf" - I think the original thread was started by Parrdaddy. I'll find that thread again - the list of attendees...

The first "group ride" that I remember was in 2003 or 2004 in Galveston at one of the pocket parks past the end of the Seawall. Allstock (and his now ex-wife) were there. Maybe Parrdaddy, maybe NelsonLT1, and me. I remember that first ride because I had been at the casino in Lake Charles all night, drove back to Crystal Beach and picked up my old 1100 ZXi, headed to Galveston - and slept on the beach most of the day :D - I think the next year I bought my square.

Got divorced, sold his ski I think. I bump into him occasionally at really random times. I'll see if I can find him to invite him. he was always a good flatwater rider
